A new season of Counterpoint concerts begins Saturday, Sept. 8 with artists Kristen and Josh Holritz, who perform as Schaafritz. The couple are well traveled soloists and chamber musicians who currently hold positions as principal flutist and associate concertmaster, respectively, of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera.
The concert will begin at St. Peter’s Church, 848 Ashland Terrace, at 7:30 p.m. Schaafritz will be joined by pianist and Counterpoint founder Tim Hinck. The performance will be free and open to the public. Donations will be gratefully accepted.
Wellness conference for women/girls
The Chattanooga chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women will host its annual health and financial wellness conference for women and girls at Erlanger Baroness Hospital Medical Mall on Saturday, Sept. 8, 7:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The conference is free and limited to 225 participants. Pre-registration is required. Registration is open and ends Saturday, Sept. 1. Women and girls may pre-register by calling 423 778-5465. Walk-ins will be accommodated if space permits. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Citizens Police Academy
The next Chattanooga Citizens’ Police Academy begins Thursday, Sept. 13. The group will meet on nine consecutive Thursday evenings. The academy offers community members a look inside the Chattanooga Police Department and how it works. Police officers will teach class participants about the use of force, SWAT, patrol, narcotics, special investigations and more.

Miller Park grand opening slated for Sept. 14
Chattanooga will celebrate the grand opening of Miller Park on Friday, Sept. 14. The Power Players featuring Willie Kitchens (The Impressions), Amber Carrington (semi-finalist on “The Voice”), Ogya World Music Band and Hive Theory will headline the festivities at the grand opening of the newly renovated park.
The day-long event will begin at 11 a.m. with a ribbon cutting and remarks from Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke, EPB President and CEO David Wade, River City Company President Kim White and BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee President and CEO J.D. Hickey. Music by Carlos Colon & The Tropical Swing Band and Hip Hop CHA will follow on the EPB Community Stage.
Events and entertainment will pick back up at 6 p.m. with performances on the EPB Community Stage and Miller Plaza, including an evening market with local vendors in Waterhouse Pavilion.
Road closures along East 10th St. and East ML King Boulevard from Market Street to Georgia Avenue will begin at 5 p.m.
