The Citizens National Bank was absorbed by the Hamilton National Bank today. The merger makes the Hamilton Bank second in the state only to the National Bank in Nashville in deposits. Officers of the newly merged bank will be: T.R. Preston, president; G.H. Miller, H.T. Olmsted, and C.M. Preston, vice presidents; J.B.F. Lowery, D.S. Henderson, and S.A. Strauss, cashiers; and E.B. Shadden, auditor.
Sunday, Aug. 27
Frank Hoyt Gailor, son of the Rev. Thomas F. Gailor, Bishop of Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee, has returned from France. He will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club dinner, where he will talk about his experiences with the Ambulance Corps in the Verdun attack.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sarl Abeel of Highland Park announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Miss Kathryne Winnie Abeel, to William Wiley Brooks, Jr. The wedding will take place in the fall at Christ Church. Mr. Brooks is the son of Mr. W.W. Brooks of this city.
Mrs. T.C. Latimore is entertaining with a house party this weekend in honor of her son, T.C. Latimore, Jr., ensign on the yacht Dolphin, who is on leave after several months’ duty.
Monday, Aug. 28
The newest dances to be popular this winter were decided today by the American National Association of Dancing Masters at their annual convention in Chicago. The new dances are the “Twinkle Trot” and the “Gem Waltz.”
Baseball fans read with keen interest the brief message from Nashville reporting the decision of Circuit Judge Matthew that it would be legal to play baseball on Sunday.
The new Agriculture Building will be ready in two weeks for the Fair at Warner Park. This is one of the finest buildings for agricultural displays in the South. The Chattanooga Fair will be open Oct. 9-15.
Tuesday, Aug. 29
The largest Tennis Tournament ever held in this city opened yesterday at Lookout Mountain Courts. A crowded gallery watched the opening match between Eugene Thomason and Courtney Twinam. Mrs. B.F. Thomas added zest to the tournament by presenting two lovely silver cups to be given to the winners.
Wednesday, Aug. 30
Miss Margaret Hunt, who has been visiting Miss Penelope Stiles in Rome, Ga., has returned home accompanied by Miss Stiles, who will be her guest for a week before leaving for Virginia, where she will attend Randolph-Macon College.
Thursday, Aug. 31
Miss Ann Watkins, who, with her mother, Mrs. Ed Watkins, is spending the summer at Linnville, N.C., suffered a broken ankle while on a hike. Col. Ed Watkins and Morgan Watkins have gone to be with them.
Mr. and Mrs. W.P. McBroom have moved to the W.E. Love home on Missionary Ridge for the winter.
Friday, Sept. 1
Mrs. Arthur W. Lawson and Miss Jane Haymore leave today to visit relatives in Chilhowee, Va.
Mrs. George C. Welbon and daughter Mary Willingham are guests of Miss Tommy Duffy en route home from North Carolina.
