Are we there yet?
Best from the past week
Jay Edwards
Best lunch – Jimmy’s Serious Sandwiches last Friday with Rebecca and Amber. It was my first time in the town favorite across from War Memorial. I had the “My Hero,” which is ham, smoked turkey, corned beef & Provolone cheese on a roll with lettuce, tomato & the house spread. Great sandwich and a good place to people watch as we spotted two Supreme Court Justices – Chief Justice Hannah and Justice Danielson, trying to blend in with the hungry masses.
Best dinner – My bride and I were driving back from Saline County where I had just listed a house (Beautiful country setting on 4.7 acres. 2400 square feet, a schoolhouse, green house, storm shelter - aka “fraidy hole.” This place even has a chicken coop!).
So we were coming back on the Congo-Ferndale Cut-Off and came to the intersection at Kanis. It was after seven and we had been talking about dinner, always an important topic. I had suggested Izzy’s when Kathy looked over and saw a restaurant in a small building. It’s called the Hayestack Café. There weren’t many cars in the parking lot, but it was a Wednesday night and we decided to throw caution to the wind and give it a shot.
We came in the door and I could see in the kitchen where there were at least two people who smiled and welcomed us.
They told us to sit anywhere and we chose a table by the window. There were three or four other groups eating or waiting to eat, and there appeared to be but one waitress, who was moving rapidly around the dining room, causing her young cheeks to be flushed.
She came to us and asked what we wanted to drink. Kathy said ice water and I asked if they had beer. The girl, who really was young, smiled and said that if they did she would drink one too. We laughed and I ordered lemonade. The menu was pretty extensive and I was having trouble deciding between the chicken fried steak and the spaghetti and meatballs. In the end I went fried. Kathy was close to ordering fried chicken but at the last moment chose the Shrimp Poor Boy and onion rings.
When our food came it was great, best meal eating out I’ve had in a long time. My chicken fried chicken (they had run out of the steak) was wonderful as were the mashed taters and green beans. But Kathy’s Poor Boy was to die for. It is better than any in town by a long shot and easily could have a spot of its own in the French Quarter.
After eating, owner and chef Andrea Hayes came out from the kitchen to visit. She talked us into her pound cake with fresh blueberries and whipped cream. I didn’t really want it but she was such a good saleswoman I couldn’t say no. Man that stuff was great too! And it was warm! Holy Moly!
Check out www.hayestackcafe.com to see some pictures of what Andrea and husband Brian are serving up. Then head out for a ride into the country for some of the best eating in the state.
Best bad movie – “Leave Her To Heaven.” I can watch Gene Tierney’s overbite for hours, which I did in this movie last Saturday night. She plays a compulsive obsessive psycho who loves husband Cornel Wilde a bit too much. So much that she wants him all to herself, which means she has to drown his handicapped brother and even kill her own unborn son by throwing herself down the stairs. Somehow though, they figured out a way to give this film a happy ending.
Best Facebook post – From Christine (mother of my nieces, Claire, Catherine and Caroline), who wrote - “When I hear myself saying things like “untie your sister,” I am reminded what an important role we, as parents, play in the lives of our children.” (Later I heard that Claire’s response to her mother’s order was, “I don’t know if I can.” Not sure whether it was Caroline or Cat who was the one tied up.
Best Major Championship of the year – The PGA. It was hard to see it end the way it did, especially for Dustin Johnson, who we had to watch melt down at Pebble Beach back in June. They say that adversity makes you stronger. If there is any truth to that then Johnson must now be the Incredible Hulk.
Best Day – It’s hard to choose the usual manic and maligned Monday as the best day of the week. But this time around the week’s first day was also the first day in about a month that we didn’t hit 100 degrees, making a Monday, for once, truly a Godsend.
