Mark Making photo exhibit

Mark Making is celebrating four years with Mark Making: More Than Art, a photo exhibition of selected projects, available for public viewing August 2 through August 30 at the Association for Visual Arts, located at 30 Frazier Avenue. Mark Making is a Chattanooga-based nonprofit that empowers individuals and transforms communities through professionally-led public art projects, with a focus on the underserved. Free concussion seminar
Tuesday, August 13
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the Chattanooga Concussion Prevention Initiative will host a free sports concussion seminar Tuesday, August 13 from 6:30 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, University Center Auditorium for community coaches, parents and school administrators in conjunction with Vanderbilt Sports Concussion Center. Attendees will be taught the signs and symptoms of a concussion, short and long-term effects of a concussive injury, baseline testing, medical management, rehabilitation, prevention and more. ScreamFree Parenting Seminar

First Things First will present the ScreamFree Parenting Seminar with author Hal Runkel at the Baylor School Chapel from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Runkel is regarded as an expert on family relationships. Parents will learn skills to help them focus on remaining calm while successfully getting through to their children. Hal and his message have been featured on thousands of media outlets including The Today Show, Redbook and Good Housekeeping. This event is free but you must pre-register online at firstthings.org or by calling 423.267-5383.
Citizens’ Police Academy
Beginning Thursday, September 5
Have you ever wanted to learn more about how the Chattanooga Police Department works? To learn more about what the men and women, who patrol and protect our city, do on a daily basis? If so, the Chattanooga Police Department’s Office of Community Outreach is once again holding its Citizens’ Police Academy. Beginning Thursday, September 5, the eight week course will give citizens a glimpse into how the Police Department does its job. Instructors from the department teach each class one night a week, covering a variety of topics including narcotics, homicide investigation, patrol and the SWAT team. To sign up for the academy, contact Officer Wayne Jefferson at (423) 643-5090. Forty seats are available. Applications must be returned no later than Tuesday, August 20.
Chattanooga Theater Center 2013-2014 schedule
The Chattanooga Theatre Centre will mark the group’s 90th anniversary with a 2013-2014 season of favorites selected from the community theatre’s unbroken 90-year string of productions. The Secret Garden will play Sept. 6-22 in the Main Theatre; Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit, a haunting comedy, will play Oct. 18-Nov. 3 in the Mildred M. Montague Circle Theatre; A Christmas Story: The Musical is slated for Dec. 6-22 in the Main Theatre; and Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple will be Jan. 24-Feb. 16, 2014 on the Circle Stage. Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew will play Feb. 28-March 16, 2014 in the Mildred M. Montague Circle Theatre; And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie will run March 21-April 6, 2014 in the Main Theatre; Pump Boys and Dinettes, a musical with Chattanooga roots, will play April 11-May 4, 2014 in the Mildred M. Montague Circle Theatre; Harper Lee’s drama To Kill A Mockingbird will play May 16-June 1 in the Main Theatre; Pippin will play June 6-July 5, 2014 in the Mildred M. Montague Circle Theatre; and Les Miserables, inspired by Victor Hugo’s novel, will run July 11-27, 2014 in the Main Theatre.
