What was going on in Chattanooga in 1962?



Saturday, Aug. 18

Thirty-seven new business firms, seven of them manufacturers, moved into the Chattanooga area during July to form the largest number of new operations here this year, it was revealed in a list prepared by the research department of the Chamber of Commerce.

Drew E. Haskins, Jr., well-known Chattanooga pharmacist and president of the Tennessee Pharmaceutical Association, has been named “Pharmacist of the Month” by the Southeastern Drug Journal. Haskins is operator of Hixson Pharmacy and East Ridge Drug Co.

Sunday, Aug. 19

The new ultra-modern Jewish Community Center held open house Sunday. Ted Robbins, membership committee chairman, was in charge of the visitors’ tours of the $750,000 facility which covers a 18-acre tract in Brainerd fronting on the new freeway and accessible from McBrien Road. Dr. Jack Tepper is president of the center and chairman of the fund-raising campaign. Harold Benowitz is executive director.

Monday, Aug. 20

Mayor P.R. Olgiati announced Monday that the City Commission has agreed on a contract with the state highway department to purchase property for the final link in the intra-city phase of the freeway – the cut through Missionary Ridge. More than 200 separate tracts are involved in the right-of-way extending from Dodds Avenue on the western side of the Ridge to Donaldson Road on the eastern side. City Auditor Bill Zachary estimated it would take about a year to complete acquisition of the property.

Tuesday, Aug. 21

Dr. LeRoy A. Martin, president of the Univ. of Chattanooga, said Monday although it might take “millions and millions of dollars,” a science center should be established at the University to attract the new electronics industry the area needs for future growth.

Wednesday, Aug. 22

Dr. Norman Hafemeister, executive director of Orange Grove School of the past seven years, was honored Wednesday for his “years of dedicated service to mentally retarded children of this area.” Dr. Hafemeister will leave September 1 to become head of department of special education at Glassboro State College, Glassboro, N.J. A cash gift was presented to Dr. and Mrs. Hafemeister by the board of directors of the Orange Grove School at the luncheon meeting of the Chattanooga Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Thursday, Aug. 23

The Joint Committee of 12 area civic bodies on Law Enforcement said in a resolution adopted Wednesday that “it will support by all possible means the maintenance of law and order during the desegregation” of public schools here, and urged “all residents of Chattanooga area to give whole-hearted personal and group support to all pubic and volunteer officers who are involved.” The resolution was signed by Raymond R. Murphy, chairman of the group.

Friday, Aug. 24

Lt. Col. Lawrence B. Kelly, artillery, U.S. Army, has been assigned as professor of military science at the Univ. of Chattanooga to succeed Lt. Col. Fred F. White who held the post for the past four years, it was announced by President LeRoy A. Martin. White has been assigned to Germany.
