ReCreate Cafe performing stories from Chattanooga’s homeless

The Salvation Army of Chattanooga’s ReCreate Café will present Walk In My Shoes: An Evening of Stories from Chattanooga’s Homeless August 16 at 7:30 p.m. This event is made possible by a Community Cultural Connections Grant received from ArtsBuild of Chattanooga.

ReCreate Café Artistic Director Tenika Dye teaches an acting class primarily for the homeless clients served by the café. Dye collected stories from people who are currently homeless, have been homeless, and even those who have never suffered homelessness. She then invited several of them to be a part of the public performance.

Dye describes the inspiration and concept of Walk In My Shoes: “The stories I hear from people are fascinating, and some are unbelievable! I wanted to find a way to share the stories so people realize we are more alike than we are different. Each performer will tell someone else’s story rather than his or her own. In other words, someone who has faced homelessness tells the story of someone who has never been there. All the performers are walking in someone else’s shoes.”

Walk In My Shoes will be performed at The ReCreate Café, located at 800 McCallie Avenue. The performance is free and open to the public; however, donations will be accepted to help cover costs. Due to the content of the material, this performance is recommended for those 13 and older, with teens being accompanied by an adult.
