Gilbert Stein, past vice-president of the Jaycees, was recognized by the Tennessee Jaycees as the most outstanding chairman of a state committee for the past year.

The Grant-Patten Milk Company has purchased the building at 1803 Crutchfield Street, which will provide several times the space of the present location, 1220 King Street.

Last-minute efforts were being made Wednesday to forestall the closing of the historic Tivoli Theater, scheduled to end its 40-year run Thursday night. Senator Estes Kefauver sent a personal telegram to Barney Balaban, president of ABC-Paramount Pictures, Inc., whose subsidiary owns the Tivoli, asking him to postpone the closing indefinitely. The Junior Chamber of Commerce has appointed Attorney Ralph H. Kelley to head a committee “to explore the feasibility of maintaining the Tivoli as a theater for use by the community.”

The city school board has adopted a new salary schedule for teachers starting at $3,920 for first, second and third year teachers with a bachelor’s degree and going to $5,450 for teachers with a master’s degree and maximum experience.
