Chattanooga firefighters are gearing up for their sixth annual Fight Against Hunger food drive, to take place August 20-26. The firefighters are collecting canned goods and other non-perishable food items for the Chattanooga Area Food Bank. Firefighters started their food drive six years ago when the Food Bank issued a public appeal for help. Supplies at the Food Bank always run low this time of year, and with a struggling economy, the demand has only increased.
The Food Bank feeds about 20,000 people every week. Assistance includes thousands of emergency food boxes for needy families and sacks of food for young children at school, who need a little extra help on the weekend. If you would like to help, drop off your food donations at any of 19 Chattanooga fire stations, at participating churches, and at Hamilton County EMS stations in Chattanooga.
Currently, the Food Bank is in need of the following non-perishable food items: Mixed vegetables, chili, beef stew, peanut butter, canned pasta, dry beans, canned fruit, tuna, flour and cornmeal. The Food Bank can also buy food at reduced rates, so monetary donations are also appreciated.
