What was happening in Chattanooga in 1961



Monday, July 10

An estimated 1,163 citizens of metropolitan Chattanooga will have jobs because of the investment of more than $8,500,000 in new and expanded manufacturing plants during the first six months of 1961. Earl J. Platt, chairman of the Industrial Committee of 100 of the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, said today. Fourteen new industries were established here since January 1.

Tuesday, July 11

An upswing in real estate activity here has sent sales for the fist six months of this year soaring over $5,000,000 more than for the same period of 1960, James R. Chamberlain, realtor, reported.

Thursday, July 13

A new S&H Green Stamp Redemption Center, at 3317 South Broad Street, opened Thursday morning. Wednesday night, an opening reception was held. Over 1,700 top-quality, brand name items are on display.

Friday, July 14

Plans to welcome the famous Civil War locomotive, the “General” back to Chattanooga next April 14 were made at a meeting of the Chattanooga Convention and Visitors Bureau and Louisville & Nashville Railroad representatives.
