Saturday, July 14

The Tennessee Veterans of World War I are holding their state convention Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Hotel Patten. About 350 veterans are attending the three-day meeting. H.M. Houston of Crossville is State Commander.

The congregation of the Signal Mountain Baptist Church has authorized the start of construction to cost about $130,000 as the initial phase in a large expansion and alteration program. Bruce C. Bishop, chairman of the building committee, said the total expansion program will involve approximately $500,000.

William Franklin “Pup” McWhorter, Circuit Court Clerk officer, veteran of two world wars and well-known Chattanoogan, died Thursday in the Veterans Hospital in Nashville. He was stricken with a heart attack about a month ago.

Sunday, July 15

Dr. Moffet R. Walker, Jr., has been appointed assistant medical director of the Provident Life and Accident Insurance Co., Robert L. MacLellan, president, announced Saturday. Dr. Walker has been medical director of the Chevrolet and Fisher Body division of General Motors Corp. in Atlanta.

Pat St. Charles disclosed Sunday that he has asked the Chattanooga Housing Authority to not renew his exclusive agency contract for sale of Golden Gate property. He stated he wants to invest in projects in gateway, and as exclusive agent, he would be barred by his contract.

Monday, July 16

Woods White, who operated Office Equipment Co. for many years, announced Sunday he will open a new store Thursday at 827 Broad Street. The store, Woods White, Inc., will sell all types of office machines.

Seven visitors from Sweden taking part in the “Experiment in International Living” program toured TVA’s Chickamauga Dam Monday.

The Chattanooga Community Concert Association has assigned another season of thrilling entertainment for the people of the Chattanooga area, it was announced Monday. The five concerts will include Robert Merrill, Metropolitan baritone; Detroit Symphony Orchestra; Ferrante and Teicher, an internationally known piano duo; National Ballet of Canada; and Royal Scots Greys and the Argyll and Southern Highlanders.

Tuesday, July 17

Spears McAllester, son of the late Sam J. McAllester, and mmbers of the Chattanooga Bar for the past 20 years has become associated with the law firm of Campbell & Campbell, Paul Campbell, Sr. and Paul Campbell, Jr., partners in the firm, announced Monday.

Mrs. Maude Grigsby Currin, vice president of Currin Co. and mother of Waddy G. Currin, died Monday in a local hospital.

Miss Gail White, “Miss Chattanooga of 1961,” returned Monday from Miami Beach where she participated in the Miss Universe festivities, which ended Saturday night. She was second runner-up in the “Miss USA” contest.

Wednesday, July 18

The Chattanooga nylon plant will be expanded and modernized by the DuPont Co. in a program that will include all four of its nylon making units, C.R. Kline, assistant plant manager here, announced Wednesday. The DuPont Company’s four nylon plants are located in Martinsville, Va., Seaford, Del., Richmond, Va., and Chattanooga.

City Fire Marshall Mike Quinn, who has been hospitalized for about two weeks as a result of a heart attack, was moved to his home Wednesday, where he will be confined for at least a month.

Thursday, July 19

The Wyandotte Chemicals Corp. will open its Chattanooga River Terminal July 27, the company announced Tuesday from its headquarters in Wyandotte, Mich. The terminal was developed by the Chattanooga Warehouse & Cold Storage Co. at the facilities of its Tennessee River Terminal.

Post 4848 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars has inaugurated a program whereby it will present $1,000 a year to the city police department to pay the expenses of sending an officer to the FBI National Academy in Washington for 12 weeks of special training. Police Commissioner H.P. Dunlap in accepting the offer said that the first officer to benefit from the plan will be Asst. Chief Lamar Boyd, head of the city’s traffic division.

Friday, July 20

The Hamilton County Zoning Appeals Board rejected the application Wednesday of a group of Charlotte, N.C., investors for permission to construct a 50-unit apartment building on Altamont Road near Hixson Pike.

The TVA has announced award of contracts totaling $1,386,297 of which $902,760 was placed with concerns having sales offices in Chattanooga.
