Among the diners at Signal Mountain Inn July 4 were Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Loveman, Mr. and Mrs. H. Clay Evans and party, Mr. and Mrs. George Fort Milton, Dr. and Mrs. J. W. Johnson, L.L. Fischer, R.C. Richard, Miss Augusta Gardenhire and Miss Ann Watkins.
Miss Abbie Palmer is in New York for the summer studying music. On her return in September, she will open her studio for piano lessons.
Dr. and Mrs. T.E. Abernathy and son, Edward, will go this week to Lake Toxaway for a stay.
Monday, July 7
Mrs. J.H. Wann and daughter, Hazel, left Saturday for a stay of several weeks in Menlo, Ga.
Mrs. Cora Griffin Jones of Dallas, Texas will remain the guest of her sister, Mrs. M.N. Whitaker, for several days longer. Mrs. Jones came to attend the Chambliss-Whitaker wedding.
Tuesday, July 8
Misses Whitlow Betterton and Isabel Alsup have returned home from Boston, where they attended school this past year.
Mrs. W.C. Stephens and little daughter and Miss Nan Underwood will leave next week for a trip to Detroit and Battle Creek, Mich.
Charles Stivers, Charles Tomlinson and Dewitt Dickson are going to Tybee Island for a vacation.
Wednesday, July 9
Eighty tons of newly mown hay on Judge Lewis Shepherd’s farm, “Altamede,” were destroyed Sunday afternoon when sparks from a passing Western and Atlantic locomotive set fire to the hay. The fire spread rapidly over the 40-acre meadow. All efforts to stop the blaze were futile.
Mrs. J.W. Perry and Mrs. Loaring Clark entertained at the home of Mrs. Perry on Vine Street in honor of Mrs. John H. Race, who leaves soon to join her husband in Cincinnati. Members of the Interdenominational Missionary Society, all present and past presidents, and all ministers’ wives were invited. The receiving hours were from 5 p.m. To 6:30 p.m.
Miss Ruby Houston and Dr. Lurton Houston of Birmingham have been the guests of Dr. and Mrs. David P. Houston. Dr. Lurton Houston is en route to Brazil, South America.
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Kirkpatrick of Nashville announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Anna Hunter, to Bruce I. Crabtree of Chattanooga, the son of Col. and Mrs. W.R. Crabtree of Belvoir Farms.
Thursday, July 10
DeForrest Spencer, popular captain and star halfback of the University of Chattanooga 1912 football team, gave his blood to an unknown woman to save her life. Mrs. Sophia Musk may live six or seven months longer due to his kindness. He will be kept in the hospital for a couple of days, his doctor reported.
Mrs. W.G. Oehmig has returned from Rome, Ga., where she visited her mother, Mrs. Edward West. Will Oehmig, who has been visiting his parents, has returned to Cincinnati.
Friday, July 11
Mrs. C.P. Herron of Washington, D.C. who has spent the past month with her daughter, Mrs. Meredith Hogshead, has returned to her home.
Mrs. Charles Daniels and Mrs. Jerome Simmons of Atlanta, who have been guests of the W.F. Hutchesons on Missionary Ridge, have returned home.
Special services will be held at Christ Church Sunday when two separate musicals will be held dedicating their handsome new pipe organ. Prof. Gordon Graham is the organist.
