Making Fourth of July safe and fun

HEALTH CORNER

Happy July 4th! Today marks one of the best fun filled holidays of the year. July 4th brings delicious barbeques, vacations, fireworks, swimming, and fun in the sun. As people pack up their cars and hit the road this Independence Day it is important to note the risks involving the holiday.

The National Safety Commission estimates around 197 traffic related deaths within the 24-hour period of the holiday. Nonfatal medically consulted injuries estimate to be over 17,000 people. Keep in mind some safety tips as you prepare to travel on the roads: do not text and drive, always wear a seatbelt, make sure your passengers are wearing their seatbelts, do not drink and drive, do not ride with anyone who is intoxicated, and avoid aggressive driving.

Along with the traveling comes the fireworks. Most people will attend a firework related function as well as dabble into the lightshow themselves. In 2010, over 8,600 fireworks-related injuries were treated in hospital emergency rooms. If fireworks are legal where you reside and you do decide to partake please remember to never let children light fireworks, light one at a time, never attempt to relight, and if you are experiencing a dry season where you live just reconsider the entire idea.

Of course, July 4th would not be the same without swimming. It is important to remember that drowning claims the lives of thousands of people a year. While swimming this weekend, pay close attention to any children with you or around you. If there is an accident, remember to closely watch the child/adult for secondary drowning. Also, please avoid using alcohol around the water. Alcohol related deaths involving water recreation are up 70 percent.

Staying cool is crucial as warm weather allows for outdoor celebrations, but the heat can create serious health hazards. Heat related illnesses are very serious, especially in children and older adults. When you are outside enjoying the weather, if you become concerned someone is suffering from overheating, move him or her to a cool shady area and call 911.

With all the memories you, your family and friends create this weekend, everyone needs to pay extra attention to safety measures. Many injuries are avoidable with proper attention. This holiday weekend, being patient and staying cautious of other drivers will help keep your family and other families safe. Use caution when enjoying a firework show and especially if you are the one entertaining the crowd. Playing appropriately in the pool and restraining from using alcohol will ensure a safe and wonderful time. Stay hydrated and enjoy a wonderful July 4th!
