The Chattanooga Bar Foundation this week announced its newest Fellows.
The Class of 2015 Fellows include John Randolph Bode, Roy C. Maddox, Jr., Timothy L. Mickel, Alicia Brown Oliver, Bart Quinn, Ross I. Schram, and Richard A. Schulman.
Incorporated in 1989, the Bar Foundation is the charitable and educational arm of the Chattanooga Bar Association (CBA). Through the Foundation, the CBA supports various charities and participates in community service, outreach programs, and educational projects. Each year, the Foundation selects new Fellows, members which provide the funding for these efforts.
To become a Fellow, one must first become an outstanding attorney and servant of the community. One must also be at least 35 years old and a licensed attorney, and have been practicing law for no less than 10 years.
John Randolph Bode
Bode is the fifth child of H.H. and Emlyn Bode, but the first to devote over three decades to the exclusive representation of management in labor and employment disputes. After graduating from the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce and the University of Richmond’s T.C. Williams School of Law, John joined Miller & Martin in 1985. He is the longtime chair of the firm’s Labor & Employment Department, and represents local, state, regional and national companies in all facets of labor and employment law, including serving as lead trial counsel and developing strategies in addressing union aggressions throughout the country.
Bode has recently been recognized as Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers (for Labor and Employment Law), and is consistently listed for his professional accomplishments in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business (for Labor and Employment Law), Best Lawyers in America (for Labor & Employment Law); and Mid-South Super Lawyers. He currently serves as the vice chair of the Labor and Employment Section of the Tennessee Bar Association (TBA) and as the legislative director of the Chattanooga Chapter of the Society for Human Resources Management, and is a member of the Labor and Employment Council for the Associated General Contractors. Each year, in addition to participating in numerous speaking engagements, John hosts, in conjunction with the CBA, John Bode & Friends: An Employment Law Update for attorneys in the local metropolitan area.
Bode recognizes that none of the above accolades would be possible without the support of his wife and daughter (Mary Beth and Mary Adams), together with all of the attorneys and staff at Miller & Martin, and all of the clients who have bestowed their trust and confidence in his counsel over the years. The Bodes are active members of First-Centenary United Methodist Church.
Roy C. Maddox, Jr.
Maddox is a native of Macon, Ga. Prior to moving to Chattanooga in 1979, he and his wife, Donna, lived in Columbus, Ga., where Maddox practiced as a certified public accountant with an international accounting firm.
Maddox graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor of business administration degree, majoring in accounting. He earned his law degree from the Mercer University Walter F. George School of Law and his Master of Laws in Taxation degree from the University of Florida School of Law. He is admitted to the state bars of Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida.
Maddox is a shareholder in the firm of Spears, Moore, Rebman and Williams. In Martindale-Hubbell, he is rated by a vote of his peers as AV Preeminent, the highest rating an attorney can earn. He is a past president of Chattanooga Tax Practitioners and is listed in Best Lawyers in America, an honor also bestowed by a vote of his peers.
While living in Chattanooga, Maddox has served on the boards of several locally based entities, and currently serves on the board of Ruby Falls. He and Donna are members of The Church of the Good Shepherd on Lookout Mountain. Maddox and Donna have a son, Perry, a daughter, Shea, and a daughter-in-law, Kate.
Timothy L. Mickel
Mickel is a member of the firm of Evans Harrison Hackett. He represents a diverse spectrum of clients in various aspects of litigation in both state and federal courts. He is the immediate past president of the Chattanooga Bar Association and a past president of the Brock-Cooper American Inn of Court. He is currently a member of the TBA House of Delegates, and is a 2010 graduate of the TBA’s Leadership Law Program.
In addition to these professional activities, Mickel currently serves on the board of the Bachman Center Council. He previously served as a two-term chairman of the board of Greater Chattanooga Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. Mickel graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1995 and from Vanderbilt University in 1992. He and his wife, Julie, live with their two children, Molly and Griffin, in Signal Mountain.
Alicia Brown Oliver
Oliver grew up in Memphis, Tenn. She obtained her undergraduate degree at Ole Miss, and her law degree at the University of Memphis. Oliver is currently in-house counsel at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, and was formerly a shareholder at Chambliss, Bahner &Stophel. She serves on the advisory board at the Tennessee Small Business Development Center, as a member of the TBA’s House of Delegates, and as an adjunct professor at UTC. She also serves on the board of A Step Ahead. She is married to Eric Oliver; they have three children.
Bart Quinn
Quinn, shareholder of Chambliss, Bahner &Stophel, advises and represents clients on a multitude of employment-related issues, including traditional management-side employment law, occupational safety and health matters, and workers’ compensation.
Quinn regularly advises local, national, and international employers on complex employment issues. He partners with clients across all industries to help them avoid litigation and regulatory agency actions.
He has successfully defended clients in litigation matters arising under major employment laws in federal and state trial and appellate courts across the country, and has represented numerous companies before federal and state administrative agencies.
Quinn is also involved in the community. He serves as chairman of Chattanooga’s Private Vehicle For Hire Board and served as secretary of the Hamilton County Election Commission from 2005–2008.
In 2013, Quinn was appointed by Gov. Bill Haslam to serve on the Governor’s Commission for Judicial Appointments.
He received his B.S. from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) in 1983 and obtained his J. D. degree from The University of Tennessee College of Law in 1986. He is an active member of the TBA, the American Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, and the CBA. Quinn is also a member of the Tennessee Defense Lawyers Association and the Defense Research Institute.
Ross I. Schram
Ross Schram, senior counsel in the firm’s Chattanooga office, concentrates his practice in real estate development. His clients include developers, lenders, and managers of shopping centers and other retail, residential, mixed-use, and office properties. He has been lead counsel for major developments in over 20 states ranging from multi-anchored enclosed regional malls to single-purpose stand-alone commercial facilities.
Schram has served as legal counsel to The Hamilton County Industrial Development Board since 1983. He is an alumnus of Kenyon College and is a graduate of Vanderbilt University Law School. Ross is a member of the Chattanooga and Tennessee Bar Associations. He is an advisory board member and past chairman of the Siskin Children’s Institute board of directors. He is a member of: International Council of Shopping Centers; Rotary Club of Chattanooga; Chambliss Center for Children board of directors; Fortwood Mental Health Center board of directors; and United Way of Greater Chattanooga’s Community Investment Committee and Allocations Task Force. He and his wife, Hillary, live in Signal Mountain, and are members of the Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, where he serves as an elder and trustee.
Richard A. Schulman
Schulman is a shareholder in the firm of Patrick, Beard, Schulman &Jacoway, is an alumnus of the University of North Carolina, is a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville College of Law, and has been practicing in Chattanooga for 42 years. He concentrates his practice on trial work and has served as lead trial counsel on numerous cases in State and Federal Courts representing individuals in the practice areas of personal injury, family law, employment law, workers compensation, professional liability, medical negligence, products liability, and civil practice.
Schulman is a member of the Chattanooga, Tennessee and American Bar Associations, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Chattanooga Trial Lawyers Association (president, 1984-1985), the Tennessee American Association for Justice, and Brock-Cooper American Inn of Court, a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and received the 2014 Harry Weil Zealous Practice of Law Award from the CBA.
