The Hamilton County Herald won top awards for Best Business Coverage and Headline Writing last week at the annual Tennessee Press Association awards banquet.
Winning articles in the business category were written by David Laprad and Nancy Henderson. Winning headlines were written by Lyle Graves.
The Knoxville Ledger, a Herald sister publication, was named Tennessee’s best newspaper for its size. Another sister publication, the Nashville Ledger, which was named the best overall newspaper in its category in 2022, won first-place awards for Best Sports Writing and Investigative Reporting.
Contributing to the Best Sports Writing win were Terry McCormick, Tom Wood and Nicki Pendleton Wood. Winning entries in the Investigative Reporting category were penned by Wood, Catherine Mayhew, Kathy Carlson and Sara Davis.
The Knoxville Ledger won individual honors in four categories (Best Business Coverage, Editorials, Local Features and Headline Writing), and finished second in three more (Best Sports Writing, Make-Up and Appearance, Best News Reporting).
Contributing to the Best Business Coverage award were Henderson, Tom Wood and Joe Morris.
Writers responsible for Local Features were Rhiannon Potkey, Joe Morris and Henderson.
Columnist Joe Rogers won the prestigious Meeman Award for Editorials for “Freedom’s great until it doesn’t suit your agenda,” “Nothing lifts the sale of a book like banning it” and “Southerners are conditioned to believe ‘Big Lie’”)
Graves won in the Headline Writing category.
