Mr. and Mrs. Corliss Buchanan of St. Louis will arrive soon to visit Mr. Buchanan’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Judson Buchanan, on Missionary Ridge.
Miss Ann Roberts of Valdosta, Ga., has returned to her home after a visit to Miss Margaret Davies in St. Elmo.
Sunday, July 26
The Kosmos Camp at Lake Lookout for boys was a very successful venture. Mrs. M.N. Whitaker, Kosmos Club president, is pleased with its success. The camp was directed by Ed Finlay, Henry Pickens, and Ed McMillin.
Misses Jennie Anderson and Virginia Charlton entertained with a large dancing party at the Charlton home Saturday night in honor of Misses Adele Lowery, Louise Murdock of Newellton, La., and Page Duncan of Atlanta. Fifty guests were invited. Punch was served by Misses Ruth Shackleford and Mary Elizabeth Charlton.
Monday, July 27
Mrs. Helen Roberts, wife of Cap’t Edward G. Roberts, was seriously injured by an automobile as she was boarding a St. Elmo streetcar. She’s at her home on St. Elmo Avenue.
A scamp who entered the home of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Shaw on Vine Street is still at large. He locked Mrs. Shaw in the bathroom, but her screams from the window brought help, and Mr. Shaw was notified. The thief, frightened by shots and excitement, escaped without getting any valuables.
Tuesday, July 28
Mrs. J. Frank Turner and Miss Josephine Turner will return Sunday from Lake Huron. They will go to Pulaski to visit Mrs. Turner’s mother.
Wednesday, July 29
War has been declared against Servia by Austria-Hungary in the briefest manifest of its kind ever known in history. All available men are called to arms.
Miss Katherine Davenport has joined Mrs. George Davenport and Miss Lila at Eastbrook Springs for a week’s stay.
Mrs. W. H. Davis of Thomaston, Ga., is visiting Mrs. W.H. Carmack on Missionary Ridge.
Elizabeth and Ann Carmack will leave Saturday for Winchester, Tenn., to visit their grandmother, Mrs. Embry.
Thursday, July 30
Mrs. Gaither L. Jones and little daughter of Beaumont, Texas, will come this week to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Lanier on Missionary Ridge.
Friday, July 31
Archeologists from Washington and New York report finding a monument with inscriptions 4,500 years old near Charleston, Tenn. The monument is a great sepulcher 720 feet in length and 35 feet high containing seven well-preserved mummies. It’s near the Hooper Milling Co., owned by J.L. Hooper. It’s contemporaneous with the Egyptian pyramids.
