Mrs. Hugh Vinson honored Misses Amelia Sadler and Maude Thomison with a luncheon at Signal Mountain Inn. Guests were Misses Mary Helen Schneider, Madeline Pemberton, Amelia Milligan, Margaret McKinney, Annie Grady, Frances Thatcher, and Nancy Sizer.
The latest forecast for the completion of the new Market Street bridge is January 1, 1917.
Sunday, July 16
Dame Fashion has promised that skirts for fall and winter will be longer. In fact, they might touch the ground. Ladies’ boots will be 16-inches high and finished at top with a cuff. White shoes will be hand painted with rainbow colors on the cuff. Prices will start at $10.
Misses Ruth Perry, Laura Elmore, and Frances Postlethwaite will leave today for Ovoca to spend a week.
Monday, July 17
Portraits were unveiled at the Stone Church Sunday of the late Dr. J.J. Manker and John A. Patten in recognition of their work in the cause of Christianity. Dr. Manker was instrumental in the erection of Stone Church and served as its first pastor. Rev. L.A. Swisher, G.C. Fletcher, and John H. Early were the speakers for the occasion paying tribute to these outstanding Christians.
A Club of 100 has been formed to minister to and prolong the life of Emma Bell Miles, the brilliant Chattanooga writer and artist who is seriously ill at her home on Walden’s Ridge. Mrs. Miles has been working on a bird book, which she hopes to complete. Mrs. Edith C. Stroup is the leader of the club.
Mrs. Susan Kline and Mrs. Isaac Phillips spent the weekend on Walden’s Ridge.
Tuesday, July 18
Mrs. Llewellyn Brown of Columbus, Ga., the former Miss Lucille Heggie, is visiting Mrs. G.W. Goodrich.
Herman Goodman, J. Goodman, M.J. Horan, C.L. Hutchinson, and Mr. and Mrs. Finley Seagle are marooned in Pulaski, Va., on the Southern Railway due to the storms and floods in that area in the past few days.
Wednesday, July 19
Following an illness of several months, Dr. D.E. Bushnell died at his home on Clarke Street this morning. He was the beloved minister of the Third Presbyterian Church. Dr. and Mrs. Bushnell celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary Feb. 17.
Miss Bertie Wenning entertained with a 500 party at her home in Highland Park. Miss Alice Huffaker win first prize. Sixteen guests were invited.
Thursday, July 20
Members of the Nancy Ward Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate Nancy Ward Day today with a picnic at Chickamauga with Mrs. Howard McClure. The “jitney” will leave Ninth and Market at three o’clock.
Mrs. James B. Frazier, Mrs. Robert Somerville and baby, and Miss Louise Frazier will leave today for Monteagle for a stay.
Friday, July 21
Miss Margaret Davenport has returned from a visit to Miss Josephine Whiteside on Lookout Mountain.
A group of young ladies has been organized to form a first aid class. It will meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 11 a.m. at the YWCA. Dr. J. Louis Bibb will be the instructor.
Will Allen Wilkerson has returned from Camp Stagmaier, where he spent two weeks with the Boy Scout contingent.
