The Bessie Smith Cultural Center this week announced the lineup for the 2015 Bessie Smith Strut, taking place Monday, June 5 during Riverbend.
The Bessie Smith Strut is the day Riverbend features blues and local nightclub bands. The event is also noted for its many food stands offering barbecued pork, beef, turkey, and seafood.
Gates to the Strut will open at 4:30 p.m., and performances will begin at 5:45 p.m. on the Champy’s Chicken Stage, to be located at MLK Boulevard and University Street. Things will kick off at The Bessie Stage at 6 p.m. This year’s event will end at 11 p.m.
Davina & the Vagabonds will get things rolling on the Champy’s Chicken Stage, followed by Jarekus Singleton at 7:15 p.m. and DieDra at 8:45 p.m. Deacon Bluz will perform first on the Bessie Stage. Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials will take over at 7:30 p.m., and Theodis Ealey (The “Stand Up In It” Man) will begin his set at 9 p.m.
Admission will cost $10 at the gate. A valid photo ID will be required for anyone 21 and older. A current college ID will be required for anyone under 21. Children 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or other accountable adult. Children 10 and under will be admitted free with an adult. Gates will be located at MLK and Lindsay Street, King Street and 10th Street, and at the train trestle on MLK (between Peeples and University Streets).
Strutters are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, cameras, and special needs assistive devices to the Strut.
Prohibited items include: coolers; food; beverages; glass containers; framed or large backpacks; metal, plastic, or folding chairs; carts; fireworks or explosives; pets; skateboards, scooters, personal motorized vehicles, or bicycles; video or audio equipment (no video or audio recording will be allowed); metal aerosol containers, including sunscreen; weapons or firearms; illegal substances (including narcotics and drug paraphernalia); and unauthorized solicitations. No illegal vending will be permitted, and no unauthorized or unlicensed vendors will be allowed.
Strutters and their belongings will be subject to search upon entry and re-entry of the Strut.
