Delegates to 86 conventions held in Chattanooga the first six months of 1961 pumped more than $1,600,000 “new dollars” into the local economy. Harry O. Ulmer, Jr., president of the Chattanooga Convention and Visitors Bureau, announced conventions are “big business” in Chattanooga.

Plans for emergency transfer of “river cargoes” over and around Wheeler Dam during the period of the Wheeler lock outage have been completed except for details. The work of placing them in operation is proceeding on an around the clock basis.

Possibly as many as 500 fallout shelters have been constructed in Chattanooga and Hamilton County, George T. Patterson, training and education officer for civil defense here estimated on a television show Sunday.

The Chattanooga Boys Choir, after a successful Eastern tour of 12 concerts in 14 days, returned home Tuesday night. Stephen Ortlip, the choir’s director reported amazing, overwhelming receptions in Washington and New York.
