Steve Thomas, Emmy Award winning television personality and former host of the home improvement shows “This Old House” and “Renovation Nation” joined Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga Area and local home building professionals Wednesday, June 11 to build, renovate, and repair two homes in Chattanooga’s Southside as part of Habitat’s nationwide Home Builders Blitz 2014.
Habitat’s Home Builders Blitz is a partnershio between Habitat and the building community to build and renovate homes across the U.S. Builders and Habitat affiliates organize all aspects of building, including securing subcontractors and auppliers, fundraising, and seeking donations of materials. During this year’s event, 83 Habitat affiliates took part in the nationwide building effort.
The nationwide project sought to build and renovate more than 250 homes. Locally, Habitat obtained materials and labor from the members of the Home Builders Association of Greater Chattanooga and the Home Remodeling Association, America’s Home Place, Collier Construction, and Dexter White Construction.
Thomas first worked with Habitat during a 1990 trip to Charlotta to cover the launch of a Habitat affiliate. He subsequently showcased the 1993 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project in Winnipeg, Canafa, and thereafter continued to integrate coverage of Habitat’s activities into this professional projects.
At work in Chattanooga since 1986, Habitat is a non-profit organization dedciated to building affordable homes for low income families. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga Area has built 246 homes, providing more than 1,000 men, women, and children with homeownership.
