Little Owl Lecture Series




The Chattanooga Audubon Society has announced the remaining schedule for its 2026 Little Owl Lecture Series, held at Little Owl Village. Each event includes a guided history hike 2-4 p.m., followed by a 4:30-6 p.m. lecture.

The series continues June 20 with historian Watson Harlan presenting “Centering the Nation: Establishing Autonomous Narratives in 18th Century Cherokee History.”

On July 18, Taylor Young will discuss “History of the Red Clay Council Grounds,” examining one of the most significant sites in Cherokee governance and history.

Archaeologist Ava Lowery takes the stage Aug. 29 with “Conquistadors and Chiefdoms,” exploring early encounters between Indigenous societies and Spanish expeditions in the Southeast.

The Sept. 19 lecture, “The Spark: Influences on the Creation of the Cherokee Syllabary and Numbering System,” will be presented by Charlie Rhodarmer, highlighting the cultural and intellectual influences behind Sequoyah’s groundbreaking writing system.

On Oct. 4, Timothy Ross will present “Native Spirituality,” offering insights into Indigenous belief systems and traditions.

The series concludes Dec. 12 with Orion Kroulek’s lecture, “Evolving Projectile Technologies in the Late Middle Woodland,” examining advancements in hunting and warfare tools used by prehistoric Native peoples.
