Saturday, June 19, 1915

It required heroic efforts to save the village of Shepherd, east of Missionary Ridge, when fire was discovered about 10:30 a.m. in a barn of John Reed’s spreading to the Baptist Church and many of the nearby homes, reducing them to ashes. Men from the Chickamauga Stone Quarry formed a bucket brigade under the direction of Will Holmes, general manager. The Baptist church, the community meeting place, had been built and given to the community by Judge Lewis Shepherd.

Mrs. F. K. Rosamond is in Jasper, Ala., visiting her parents, Judge and Mrs. J.B. Shields. Later, she will go to North Carolina to represent the First Presbyterian church at the Presbyterial in Montreat.

Sunday, June 20

Misses Bert and Katherine Newell will entertain with a Japanese tea at their home on Walden’s Ridge Tuesday in honor of Miss Laura Voight.

The most important social event of the week will be the meeting of Tennessee Bar Association in Chattanooga. In addition to the regular meetings, the wives of the attorneys will be entertained with a tea, luncheons, and auto rides. The committee to entertain the ladies is composed of Mrs. M.M. Allison, chairman; Mesdames A. W. Chambliss, Nathan Bachman, S.B. Strang, J.F. Finley, and J. Lon Foust; and Misses Zella Armstrong and Eileen O’Brien.

Miss Frances Postlethwaite, who graduated from Newell’s Sanitarium, is taking a post-graduate course at John Hopkins in Baltimore.

Mrs. E.O. Wells, Mrs. Herman Estes, and Miss Margaret Wells will go to Jasper, Tenn., to visit Mrs. John Campbell and Mrs. Alan Kelley.

Monday, June 21

Mrs. Olive Brown Cole will leave for Detroit and Port Huron, Mich., after spending some time with her daughter, Mrs. Thomas Trimby, on Missionary Ridge.

Mrs. Sterling Courtney and little son, Richard, are visiting in Washington, D.C.

Tuesday, June 22

Sons of the Tennessee and Alabama Division of the Veterans of U.S.A. held its annual meeting here Monday at G.A.R. Hall. I.A. Miler of Ensley, Ala., was elected commander. He succeeds F.G. Kemper of Chattanooga, who was presented a silver cross and a $1 bill as a souvenir of his administration. Birmingham, Ala., was selected as next year’s meeting place.

Miss Florence Betts of St. Louis is the guest of Mrs. Jack Betts, and later will visit Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Betts in St. Elmo.

Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Spears and Mrs. Joe Brown have returned from a visit in Jasper, Tenn.

Wednesday, June 23

Attorney General Frank Thompson, who has been in Nashville on business, will return today.

Thursday, June 24

Chattanoogans were thrilled as they witnessed the first appearance of Miss Loraine Mischler and George Rule at the Majestic Theater in their exhibition of modern dances. A packed house greeted the dancers with great enthusiasm. Miss Mischler is a beautiful Chattanooga girl and Mr. Rule is a popular Chattanoogan.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Edmonson Smartt will spend next week on Walden’s Ridge as the guest of the Putman Morrisons.

Miss Helen Johnson will visit her sister, Mrs. Samuel Boyd Allen, at Tate Springs next week.

Friday, June 25

Rube Marshall was on a rose-laden path today when the Lookouts went out to win a game for him from Little Rock. The Lookouts have been losing lately, and their impressive playing today boosted their pitcher’s morale.
