See See Rock City is continuing its partnership with Wings to Soar in an ongoing peregrine falcon restoration project.
Two brother peregrines arrived at See Rock City on May 27, and were placed in a hack box to prepare for release into the wild at sunrise on Monday, June 13. These brother birds were from a breeder in Hastings, Minn., and were 43 days old.
“We’re excited to be partnering once again with Wings to Soar for this year’s peregrine falcon release from See Rock City’s Lover’s Leap area,” said Jeff Raabe, director of operations for See Rock City. “We hope our program will allow this beautiful raptor species to be repopulated in the Chattanooga and North Georgia areas after years of extinction here.”
Wings to Soar has led the falcon program at See Rock City since 2006, when the first peregrines, Garnet and Frieda (named after See Rock City’s founders), were released. Since then, See Rock City has released eight other peregrines from the hacking site.
See Rock City encouraged its social media followers to help name the two birds. The names chosen were Lewis and Clark.
Wings to Soar is a nonprofit that cares for non-releasable birds of prey. John and Dale Stokes of Wings to Soar also host birds of prey shows at See Rock City every Friday through Sunday during the summer and daily during the week of July 4. Find out more at www.seerockcity.com/birds.
