Over 300 women were registered late Friday for the four-day convention of the Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs at Hotel Patten. “Women in Orbit” is the theme of the annual Tennessee Convention.
Mrs. Gordon Street, Jr., of Chattanooga, the former Judy Eller, won her sixth state Women’s Golf Tournament at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville Saturday, defeating Connie Day of Cleveland.
Sunday, June 17
The University of Chattanooga will receive a share of a grant made to Tennessee Colleges by the United States Steel Foundation, Inc. A total of $24,000 was presented to Dr. Peyton N. Rhodes, president of Southwestern at Memphis and of the Independent Colleges Fund by Arthur V. Wiebel, president of U.S. Steel’s Tennessee Coal and Iron Division. Along with UC and Southwestern, the University of the South and David Lipscomb College will share in the $24,000 grant.
Representatives of the Siskin Memorial Foundation stated Sunday that the “365 Club” now has 7,000 members in the Chattanooga area. Miss Gladys Post, administrator of the center, outlined plans for expansion of services.
Monday, June 18
Plans for a 250-bed county nursing home were disclosed to the County Council and City Commission at their joint budget hearing Monday. Drawings for the project were shown by Roy McDonald, chairman of the Erlanger Hospital board of trustees, and architect William A. Martin. The modern nursing home would be erected on the county’s property at Silverdale. Judge Frost said there will be beds reserved for paying patients.

Chattanooga’s Jeffie Johnson has been named State Insurance Man of the Year, for the past year. Mr. Johnson, special agent for Provident Life and Accident Insurance Co.’s home office agency, was presented a plaque at the closing session of the Tennessee Association of Life Writers Annual Convention in Nashville last weekend.
Wednesday, June 20
There have been 931 sub-standard housing units rehabilitated and 103 demolished in Chattanooga during the year from June 16, 1961 to June 19, 1962, Inspectors William Giles and Raymond Fox stated in their annual report to the Better Housing Commission Wednesday.
John C. Stophel, Chattanooga attorney and public accountant, was named “Jaycee of the Year” at award ceremonies following the Jaycee’s weekly luncheon meeting at Hotel Patten.

The Atlanta Division of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad will be added to Chattanooga effective July 1, and eventually, the division offices will be moved to Atlanta, it was announced by Thomas J. Hale, Chattanooga Division Superintendent Wednesday.
