The following boys received diplomas Thursday night at the 5th annual commencement exercises at McCallie School: Clifford Grayson, Richard Dugger, William Perry, Irving Reilly, Frances Warrenfels, Griffin Martin, Melville Shyer, Sims Read, Frank Atlee, Alwyn Brown and Robert Nelson.
Miss Irene Barnes entertained with a linen shower in honor of two brides, Misses Mae Becking and Annielou Miler. Sixteen guests were invited.
Mrs. Sue Johnson entertained with a bridge luncheon at her home in St. Elmo in honor of Mrs. Frank Davies of Chicago, the former Miss Thankful Johnson of St. Elmo.
Sunday, June 2
W. Scott Raulston has formally accepted the nomination for County Judge, to run on the Republican ticket. He was nominated at the County Convention May 18 and read a carefully prepared acceptance speech before the Committee Saturday.
A wedding of note in the social life of the South was held Saturday night when Miss Katherine Trigg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Trigg, was married to J. Walter Love, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Love of Missionary Ridge. Dr. W.E. Thompson of Centenary Church performed the ceremony.
Miss Fay Shelly of Louisville, Ky., will arrive the last of the week to attend the Bell-Nixon wedding. She will be guest of Mrs. J. Leo Smith on Vine Street.
Monday, June 3
The Lookout Ball Club has signed a local player, Collis Spencer, to be third baseman. He formerly played on the “Billikens” for Johnny Dobbs until he injured his ankle. He replaces “Honey Boy” Evans who has been sold to Saginaw.
Mrs. Coates and daughter, Miss Mary Coates of Missionary Ridge, will be the guests this week of Mrs. J. S. Mighton on Sixth Street before leaving for their new home in Florida.
Mrs. J.L. Graham and Howard Graham will return home today from Montgomery, Ala. Landis Graham will return soon from Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
Tuesday, June 4
There are 50 visiting golfers, many of them the South’s best, trying out the Chattanooga course for honors in the Southern Association. This association consisting of 29 clubs from over the South was organized in Chattanooga in 1902. Mr. A.W. Gaines is president. Some of Chattanooga’s golfers who will play in the opening tournament today are: Robert Davidson, J.H. Waite, J.P. Edington and E.H. “Ted” Coy.
Miss Maude Bowser will leave Thursday for Somerset, Ky., to attend the wedding of her brother John F. Boser to Miss Grace Virginia Smith.
Tennessee Democrats are elated over the decision of the Hon. J.B. Frazier to run for governor of Tennessee. They feel he is the only man to carry the banner of victory as he is a magnificent and convincing speaker.
Wednesday, June 5
The University of Chattanooga commencement was held this morning with Dr. Loaring Clark as speaker. James E. Walker, a member of the graduating class and class representative, made a very fine speech full of good ideas and sound truths. He graduated cum laude. Other graduates winning honors were: Misses Elizabeth Vestal Burgess, Ada E. Fuller, Lealey Dunning and Roxie Belle O’Fellers, and Messrs Guy McFarland Swingley, John V. Trotter and Wilbur E. Hart.
Miss Inez Hyder has gone to New York for a stay.
Miss Cora Stratton will entertain with a tea in her studio in honor of Mrs. Willard Steele, a recent bride.
Thursday, June 6
Gov. Ben W. Hooper will appoint Mrs. L. Crozier French of Knoxville to be judge of the Juvenile Court. Mrs. French will be the first woman judge in Tennessee. She has just served as president of the State Federation of Women’s Clubs and is well known throughout Tennessee.
Misses Edith and Ethel Phillips have returned to their home in Winchester after a visit to their sister, Mrs. J.J. Lynch on High Street.
Friday, June 7
Prof. Leslie Stauffer of the University of Chattanooga will sail from Philadelphia on Steamship Haveford for Liverpool with two professors from Ohio Wesleyan University to spend the summer in Europe. They will return in September.
A pretty wedding was solemnized Thursday night in the First Christian Church when Miss Irene Dobbs and Walter LeGrande Stuart were married by Dr. T.S. McCallie. Following a reception, the bride and groom left for a northern trip.
Miss Mary Kelly will entertain with a kitchen shower at her home on McCallie Avenue honoring Miss Mildred McCracken, a bride-elect.
