With more than 40 years of experience trying high-profile criminal defense and civil cases, Jerry Summers has paved a remarkable career path.
In his recent publication, “The Turtle and The Lawyer,” Summers narrates the many paths his life has presented, including the path he chose to follow.
Recognized each year since 1983 as one of “The Best Lawyers in America,” Summers didn’t want to promote himself, but rather acknowledge how specific Chattanooga and regional friends have shaped who he’s become.
Upon initially reading the title of Summers’ book, many do not see the relation between “a turtle and a lawyer” as, aesthetically, the two have no similarities. However, throughout his publication, Summers explains the analogy between his personal life and a turtle placed on a fence post. One of Summers’ high school and college mentors, Dr. Walter L. “Oogie” Martin, Jr., once said, “If you see a turtle sitting on a fence post, you know he didn’t get there by himself.” This particular quote has encompassed Summers’ life story, and he uses it to describe the role Chattanooga friends, family, and professional acquaintances have played in guiding him through his journey.
“My desire is that ... [my] readers understand that life is not solely about the successes one achieves, but is even more about the failures one survives. Without failure, one cannot enjoy the beauty of achieving their individual success,” said Summers.
Numerous individuals have impacted Summers throughout the years, but without the support of Martin, Coach Stanley J. Farmer, and Arnold “Sammy” Joyce, he would not have had the education and athletic opportunities he was able to experience.
Summers said he’s grateful to the men who went above and beyond to help turn his dreams into realities. “I believe we all have individuals that have helped us to achieve our goals, individuals who supported our vision and constantly pushed us to become greater,” said Summers. “As we travel the path life presents us, we must take a moment to pause and recognize those who have influenced our journey.”
Summers will be signing his book at the Book Company, located at 3205 Ringgold Road, from 9:00 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 10. He will acknowledge those who have impacted his life, as well as answer any questions regarding his publication. “Proceeds from my book will be donated to Central High School, University of the South, University of Tennessee College of Law, Area IV Special Olympics, and Orange Grove Center,” said Summers. “These organizations have had a tremendous impact on my life, and the least I can do is contribute to them in return.”
