See Rock City has formed the See Rock City Institute of Hospitality and Tourism Management at The Howard School. The commitment by SRC will continue through 2022 and includes a significant financial contribution, field trips, job shadowing, faculty touring, advisory roles and preferential part-time job availability for students.
“Tourism is a major economic driver in our region and provides both first jobs and careers for thousands of citizens in our community,” says SRC President and COO Susan Harris. “With chefs, artists, accountants, marketers, maintenance technicians, horticulture specialists and professionals in guest service, event production and leadership, our team is eager to connect with the students and teachers at Howard.”
Through Future Ready Institutes, teachers of all content areas work with the career theme teacher to provide classroom instruction. The goal is for students to understand why a lesson is important and how to use the information in the future.
“It’s vital that graduates of Hamilton County Schools are post-secondary ready and prepared to succeed in college or a career after graduation,” says Bryan Johnson, superintendent of Hamilton County Schools. “Through partnerships with community leaders like See Rock City, the Future Ready Institutes are opening doors to opportunities for our graduates and their families.”
Travel industry jobs lead to higher wages in comparison to those whose first jobs were in manufacturing, health care and most other industries, according to the U.S. Travel Association. More than 40% of workers get their start in travel and tourism.
Future Ready Institutes have been a part of Howard School since the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year with the Erlanger Institute of Healthcare and Innovation. The school plans to add the Institute of Robotics and Welding and the Institute of Architecture and Construction for the 2019-2020 school year.
