Chickamauga Battlefield Bicycle Tours begin
Outdoor Chattanooga will once again partner with Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park for free monthly bicycle tours of Chickamauga Battlefield beginning May 19 at 9:30 a.m. at the Battlefield Visitors Center. Adults and kids ages 8 and older are invited to take a leisurely ride around the battlefield with a National Park interpretive ranger to learn about Civil War history. Bring your own bicycle or borrow one from the Outdoor Chattanooga mobile bicycle fleet. Riders must be at least 5’ tall to borrow a bicycle. To reserve a loaner bike, call the Battlefield Visitors Center at (706) 866-9241. Helmets are required for all riders.

National Public Works Week
Join the City of Chattanooga’s Public Works Department as it celebrates National Public Works Week. National Public Works Week is a celebration of the men and women in North America who provide and maintain infrastructure and services collectively known as Public Works. There will be a hands-on exhibit of the vehicles the Public Works Department uses on May 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Coolidge Park. There will be educational exhibits on the local Public Works Department as well as a display of specialized equipment on May 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Miller Plaza Pavilion.

Education and the Latino Community
The next segment of the Latino Awareness Series, “Education and the Latino Community,” will take place on May 21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at East Lake Elementary, located at 3600 13th Avenue. The Latino Awareness Series, comprised of quarterly two-hour luncheon workshops, features speakers addressing topics deemed by the public as “the most important and pressing” in the Chattanooga Latino community. Through the Latino Awareness Series workshops, businesses and individuals will learn how to prepare to work and interact with the Latino community. This event is open to the public and costs $10. Fifth Annual Jewish Film Series
Five Jewish-themed, award-winning films produced in Germany, Argentina, Israel and the U.S. will be shown on five consecutive Wednesdays evenings at 7 p.m. beginning May 23 at the Jewish Cultural Center, located on 5461 North Terrace Road. These films are suitable for those 16 and older. Tickets are $5 per person and include popcorn. Soft drinks are available for purchase. The series schedule is as follows: May 23: “Kaddish for a Friend”; May 30: “A Matter of Size”; June 6: “Ahead of Time”; June 13: “Anita”; and June 20: “David.”

Free concert at the library
The Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Wind Quintet will perform at the downtown branch of the Chattanooga Public Library at 2:30 p.m. There is no cost to attend.

Internet genealogy workshop
To highlight the Internet genealogy resources made accessible through the Chattanooga Public Library, the local history and genealogy department of the library is holding a series of free workshops. The May 26 workshop will take place at the Eastgate branch at 10 a.m. Because many of the newly released 1940 records have not yet been indexed, Mary Helms, head of the local history department, will guide participants through step-by step search methods. In addition, the Chattanooga Public Library has purchased subscriptions to leading genealogical databases for use by library patrons. These include Ancestry Library Edition, HeritageQuest Online, Fold3, World Vital Records, American Ancestors by the New England Historic Genealogical Society and the Tennessee Sanborn Maps.
