Central High School has been chosen to receive the Bellamy Flag Award for 1963, one of the nation’s highest honors for a secondary educational institution. Presented annually, the Bellamy citation recognizes the patriotic contribution of Francis Bellamy of Rome, N.Y. who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag. Each year, a state is selected for the award. Tennessee was designated for 1963 and Central was declared the outstanding school over 67 other competitors.

Some 2,500 persons attended the Tony Martin Show at Memorial Auditorium Saturday night for the benefit of the “365 Club” of Operation Crossroads, projects of the Siskin Rehabilitation Center. Already more than 6,000 persons have joined the “365 Club” – $3.65 is all it costs. A penny a day to be used in support of the work of the Center.
The Concord Baptist Church, East Brainerd Road, will carry out a $400,000 expansion program, it was announced Saturday. The Rev. M. Dale Larew is pastor of the church.

More than 500 hospital officials representing some 150 hospitals throughout the state are expected to meet at Hotel Patten Monday and Tuesday for the 24th annual convention of the Tennessee Hospital Association. James E. Ferguson, president of the association and administrator of the University of Tennessee Memorial Hospital at Knoxville will make the welcoming address.

The Chattanooga Housing Authority Tuesday accepted the proposal of American Real Estate Corp. for a $5,000,000 development of an 11-acre tract west of the freeway and north of Ninth Street in the Golden Gateway. American Real Estate Corp. will erect a 12-story office building, a plaza and a community hall to its original proposal of a self-service department store with a food section and auto accessories section, a shoppers mall, specialty shops, a restaurant, cafeteria and a branch bank.
John L. Hutcheson III has rejoined Burlington Industries organization as manager of its Cleveland Woolens Division, Henry R. Rauch, Burlington board chairman, announced Tuesday.

The Eastgate Center Merchants’ Association was formed Wednesday by businessmen representing stores in the newly constructed shopping center and meeting in conjunction with Independent Enterprises, Inc. officials at the Read House. The shopping center, located on Brainerd Road, scheduled for a grand opening August 30, already has 23 store locations under lease with locations for 10 more.
Sister Agnes Borgia of Memorial Hospital was named president of the Tennessee Association of Medical Records Librarians which concluded its 12th annual convention at Hotel Patten Tuesday.

An estimated 870,000 visits were made to TVA dams and steam plants in April, an increase of 51,000 compared to the same month last year, TVA reported Tuesday. Pickwick Landing Dam was first with 116,000 visitors, Kentucky Dam second with 107,000, and Chickamauga Dam third with 98,100.

Paul. J. Scoggins, of Summers-Whitehead Post 14 of the American Legion, chairman for Memorial Day services, at the National Cemetery on Tuesday at 2 p.m. announced that Lee Anderson, editor of the News-Free Press will be the principal speaker at the ceremonies.
