Highland Park Methodist Episcopal Church South added to National Register of Historic Places

The Tennessee Historical Commission has added Highland Park Methodist Episcopal Church South to the National Register of Historic Places. Begun in 1907 and completed in 1916, the Highland Park Methodist Episcopal Church South is a good example of neo-classical architecture in Hamilton County.

The Chattanooga firm of Bearden and Foreman designed the church, which is located in the Highland Park neighborhood.

Highlights include the building’s grand Scamozzi columns, octagonal dome, interior woodwork and stained glass windows. Keeping the neo-classical design, Benjamin Hunt of Chattanooga’s R.H. Hunt firm designed a Sunday school annex in 1924.

The National Register of Historic Places is the nation’s official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation. It is part of a nationwide program that coordinates and supports efforts to identify, evaluate and protect historic resources. The Tennessee Historical Commission administers the program in Tennessee.
