Saturday, April 19

Mr. and Mrs. McCleary of Chicago and Mr. and Mrs. Dumas of Mobile, Ala., will be guests of Mrs. Sue C. Johnson for the Confederate Reunion.

Sunday, April 20

Major W.J. Bass has received an appointment as Colonel on the staff of General Bennett Young for the Confederate Reunion here in May. Major Bass will be chairman of the parade committee.

One of those heartbreaking games that send enthusiastic fans home sad was played today. The Lookouts played the Barons, with Coveleskie pitching his best. For eight innings, no one passed second base, but Flick’s boot in the ninth caused a tie, then the Barons took over, winning 8-1.

Miss Patti Martin has been appointed maid of honor to Miss Martha Bailey, sponsor of the Florida Division. Miss Martin is the beautiful and talented daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Martin.

Monday, April 21

Many Chattanoogans are going to Atlanta for Grand Opera this week with such distinguished singers as Caruso, Scotti, Bori, and other members of the Metropolitan Opera Company of New York. This will be Miss Lucrezia Borgia’s first appearance in Atlanta.

A feature of today’s City Commission meeting will be acting on an ordinance prohibiting chickens running at large, as it is considered destructive to property. A penalty will be placed upon owners of domestic fowl if they fail to cooperate.

Tuesday, April 22

Daniel H. Benscoter, a student of Baylor School, has received a silver badge from Century Publishing for his contribution to the May number of St. Nicholas magazine written as a school composition. The name of the article is “A Family Tradition.”

The roads going up Missionary Ridge, the Shallowford, and Birds Mill, are being repaired, as they were badly damaged by recent heavy rains.

Wednesday, April 23

A surprise wedding was celebrated Tuesday night in St. Elmo when Helen Betts was married to Frank L. Miller, Jr., at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Betts. Dr. R.A. Kelly officiated. Mr. Miller is the younger son of Frank L. Miller of Miller Bros. The popular young couple has a large circle of friends.

Misses Edith and Ethel Phillips of Winchester, Tenn., will arrive soon to visit Judge and Mrs. J.J. Lynch.

Honor students have been chosen for Central High School by the faculty and student body: Carol Denton will be valedictorian; Miss Leola McDonald will be salutatorian; William Seagle will be the faculty representative; and Miss Lucille Lanham and James Bass will be the class representatives. Commencement will be May 23.

Thursday, April 24

Mrs. Elliot and Miss Louise Elliot of Logansport, Ind., have returned to their home after a visit with Mr. and Mrs. William Elliot of Missionary Ridge.

Col. D.M. Steward has been appointed chairman of the Brigade Post Committee of the Chamber of Commerce for the reunion. His committee is composed of W.J. Bass, Newell Sanders, H.C. Adler, J.P. Hoskins, and V.D. Mahoney.

Miss Irene Nash has been visiting relatives in Dallas, Texas, and will go to Norman, Okla., before returning home.

Friday, April 25

Mr. and Mrs. George Carswell of Macon, Ga., will be the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Colburn and Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Carswell for the reunion.

Misses Alleen and Maggie Lynn Peeples entertained with a bridge party in honor of Miss Stella Brenner of Alexandria, La., Thursday.

Their guests were Misses Marie Bell, Hazel Kent, Katherine Betts, Grace Shackleford, Mary Steward, Elizabeth Vance, Willie Caulkins, Lucille Heggie, Lillian and Hattie Clair Jewell, Rachel Peeples, Jessie Simmons, and Lucille Carter, and Mrs. C.L. Ford.

Mrs. A.C. Glenn of Paris, Ky., is the guest of Mrs. Lee Shahan on Oak Street.
