America’s Navy is coming to Chattanooga to participate in the city’s 68th annual Armed Forces Day Parade and Celebration.
The United States Navy Band will march in a parade beginning 10 a.m. on Friday, May 1 in downtown Chattanooga. Adm. Jonathan Greenert, the Navy’s chief of naval operations, will represent the Navy as the parade’s reviewing officer.
Greenert, the Navy’s top-ranking officer and member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is a native of Butler, Penn. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1975 and completed studies in nuclear power for service as a submarine officer. Greenert became the 30th chief of naval operations Sept. 23, 2011.
The U.S. Navy Band is the official musical organization of America’s Navy. Participating in more than 1,300 ceremonies every year, the Ceremonial Band performs music at official military, government, and other special events. The group’s duties include arrival ceremonies at the White House and Pentagon, changes of command, military retirement ceremonies, and funerals at Arlington National Cemetery.
