KultureCity has partnered with the Chattanooga Zoo to make the zoo and its programs, events and exhibits sensory inclusive.
During the adaptation, medical professionals trained the zoo’s staff on how to recognize guests with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory overload situation.
Sensory bags, equipped with noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards and weighted lap pads are now available to all zoo guests who might feel overwhelmed by the environment.
The zoo has also provided a dedicated sensory room designed by medical professionals for those who might need a quieter and more secure environment.
Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions. One of the major barriers for these individuals is sensitivity to overstimulation and noise, which is a large part of the zoo’s environment.
Before visiting the Chattanooga Zoo, families can download the free KultureCity app and view which sensory features are available and where. The app also includes a preview of what to expect while visiting the zoo.
