On Thursday, April 4, Chattanooga Parks and Recreation opened a new computer lab at Carver Community Center as part of its Lexia After-School Program. The lab is open to children in grades one through eight Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The trained staff creates a safe, supportive environment, said a Chattanooga Parks and Recreation representative.
The Lexia After-School Program complements the current school curriculum and was designed to strengthen a participant’s sense of belonging in his or her community. Participants enjoy a wide range of activities including homework assistance, healthy snacks, supervised computer use, life skills, team building, sports, fitness, arts and culture, and educational field trips. Participants earn points for attendance, improvement, good behavior, and volunteering.
Law firm Miller & Martin donated funds to purchase the software. Other partners include The Gang Task Force and the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga.
