Mojo Burrito has a lot going for it. First, it’s got a good rhyme going on with the name. Second, as their slogan – “Let Us Roll One For You” – says, they are ready to roll up a tasty and plump burrito to fill your lunch or dinner cravings.
Mojo Burrito has three interesting and eclectic locations. The newest is the one in East Brainerd located on Jenkins Road next to Lupi’s Pizza. There’s another Mojo in St. Elmo, and the third Mojo is easily visible from Dayton Boulevard in Red Bank.
All of the Mojo locations feature art from locals. More information on the artists or the artwork is something that Mojo owner, Eve Williams, is all about and she is glad put customers in touch with the artists if sent an email on the Mojo Burrito Web site.
At the Red Bank location, featured artists include Rey Alfonso, Steve Terlizzese, Andy Montgomery and many more. You won’t have to look far for the artwork, because the tables themselves were all produced by different local artists. The St. Elmo location is now featuring Matt Dunmore photography. Paintings, collages, and photography are just a few of the art mix that helps the food digest all the more sweetly.
Particularly at the Red Bank location, the interesting art will keep you looking around. They have a shiny sculpture on the wall that looks like it may have once been a department store mannequin and there are glass globes hanging in the windows to catch the light. After seeing all this art, and on a pretty day, try their outdoor seating in the shade.
My experience at the Red Bank Mojo is worth raving about. I’d never been to Mojo before and was a little overwhelmed at their large menu filled with so many tasty sounding things. With the help of an employee, I picked out the “Mojo” filled with steak. This burrito had the option to be filled with black or pinto beans and any toppings I so desired.
Oh no, I thought, more choices! But it was no problem, as the staff member helped me go down the line and choose my flavored wrap between the choices of whole wheat, spinach, chipolte, sun dried tomato basil, jalapeno cheddar and garlic herb, and fill it with pico de gallo, tomatillo salsa, sour cream, black beans and Spanish rice. Thanks to our teamwork, we created a delicious lunch for me.
The flavored wrap was soft and fresh, and the chunks of steak and sauce inside made this juicy burrito irresistible. The burrito came with chips and salsa that was mild and flavorful.
When I sat down to inspect the restaurant more closely, I was intrigued by the other items in the location. The walls were painted green and orange in a way that really livened up the small space. Along with the upbeat music that was playing while I ate, it put me in a relaxed and good mood. Each table in Mojo was lit with a different type of lamp. Some were shaped like glass flowers; others, patterned glass; and still others, in modern art styles of their own.
The tin roof above my head reminded me of when I visited an authentic Mexican restaurant in Florida, but was glad that Mojo was cleaner and brighter than that place had been. Mojo even had a disco ball and strings of multicolored lights in their dining room. The message that Mojo is sending is clear in that they are open to the whole family and want your dining to be a pleasant affair.
Another menu item I found interesting was the shrimp tacos and the tilapia tacos. I’ve never been a big fan of mixing different types of food such as seafood and Mexican, but the Tilapia tacos sounded amazing with their cornbread batter, jalapenos and a side of pineapple salsa.
I did try one of their tempting desserts on display in the form of a giant marble swirled brownie. This chocolate dream dessert was made locally by the Cherry Street Diner, the server told me, and another server said it was a must try. Indeed, this dessert was moist and soft, gooey and not-too-rich. All in all, it was a perfect brownie.
On the tables, Mojo has cards you can fill out where they will send you a coupon for a free birthday entrée and drink for a dine-in date as well as other special offers from Mojo Burrito. It’s a good idea to fill one of these out whichever Mojo you end up dining with, because I can guarantee you are going to want to get your Mojo on again and again.
