Keep Soddy-Daisy Beautiful and the city of Soddy-Daisy will plant 35 native trees in Veterans Park as it celebrates its second annual Arbor Day festivities March 4.
“We’re thrilled to continue our efforts to beautify and improve our community,” says Jim Stewart of Keep Soddy-Daisy Beautiful. “And we’re grateful for the financial support of the city, our donors and the Tennessee Department of Forestry.”
Student volunteers from Ivy Academy, Soddy-Daisy High School and the Scouts will join community members in planting Red Maples, Willow Oaks and Tulip Poplars – the state tree of Tennessee.
The event is open to the public. Volunteers will plant the first tree at 9:45 a.m. The occasion will conclude with a program that begins at noon.
Protégé Chattanooga nominations open
Nominations for Protege Chattanooga 2023-24 are open until March 20 at chattanoogachamber.com/protege-chattanooga-applications-nominations.
Protege Chattanooga is a nine-month program during which early- and mid-career professionals learn from a diverse group of seasoned professionals and each other. The program offers two cohorts – day or evening – made up of 12 participants each.
Cohorts meet twice a month beginning with an orientation Aug. 24 and ending with graduation May 9, 2024.
Applicants must be between the ages of 21 and 40. The cost to participate is $500. Partial scholarships are available.
Past Protege candidates currently hold leadership positions at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, UNUM, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the city of Chattanooga.
The Young Professionals of Chattanooga and the Chattanooga Chamber Foundation host Protege Chattanooga.
Salvation Army needs volunteers, donations
The Salvation Army’s Blessing Place is now open from 1-3 p.m. every Monday through Thursday, allowing Chattanooga’s unhoused neighbors to shop with dignity for necessities clothing at no charge.
The Blessing Place is run by volunteers and carries groceries, sanitation items, new undergarments and clothes for men, women and children.
The Salvation Army is asking for volunteers and donations for the Blessing Place. Items needed include: new canned goods, peanut butter and jelly, grains, individually wrapped snack items, water and sports drinks, travel sanitation items, new undergarments, clothes, shoes and socks for men, women and children, and waterproof gear.
Deliver donations at The Salvation Army’s 614 Corps Shelter at 800 McCallie Avenue.
