March 24

Ready to Garden workshop

Crabtree Farms will host the first of two gardening workshops from 10 to noon. Topics will include soil preparation and testing, planning, fertilization, site selection, weed and pest control, and planning for the various gardening seasons. The cost for non-members is ten dollars. Crabtree Farms is located at 1000 East 30th Street. The second workshop is scheduled to take place April 7.

Award-winning illustrator at the library

Award-winning artist and illustrator Michael White will present an interactive family program beginning at 11 a.m. at the Chattanooga Public Library – Downtown. White is the illustrator of several children’s books, including “The Library Dragon” and “The Secret of Old Zeb.” The free program will include hands-on drawing techniques and step-by-step lessons on how to start your own book.

Plant a tree on the South Chickamauga Greenway

The Hamilton County Water Quality program and the City of East Ridge will host a tree planting family volunteer day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. along Spring and South Chickamauga Creeks. Park Stewardship Program town meeting

The City of Chattanooga Parks and Recreation Department and the Chattanooga Park Stewards Committee during a town meeting from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Stadium Club at Finley Stadium will discuss their initiative to create a Park Stewardship Program that will improve the environmental and aesthetic quality of local parks and greenways through the contributions of volunteers.

Author Melissa Levi Book Signing Event

Chattanooga resident Melissa Levi will be available to sign copies of her book, “Synthetic Soul,” at Books-A-Million at 5230 Highway 153 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. In the words of Tate Publishing, “Synthetic Soul” is “a thrilling novel about the deepest, darkest experiment known to man – Jesus Christ’s clone, the Antichrist.”

Free Sunday at Hunter Museum

Bring your family to the Hunter Museum of American Art for a free day of gallery exploration, activities for the kids and a special performance at 1 p.m. by the Creative Underground in celebration of National Jazz Month.

A Legacy of Strong Women

In a return visit to the Hunter Museum of American Art, Chattanooga City Councilwoman Carol Berz at 6 p.m. will speak about Randolph Rogers’ “Ruth Gleaning” in a discussion of the legacy of women and their strength historically and today. Free to all in the community.

Women’s mountain bike clinics

Scott’s Bicycle Centre in Cleveland, Tenn., will host a series of women’s mountain bike clinics on Monday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at area state and local parks. Women of all skill levels are invited to learn the basics of riding, mountain biking technique and trailside repairs from instructor Elizabeth Glas. Synchrony: Oliver Herring

Oliver Herring, one of the featured artists in the current Hunter Museum of American Art exhibition, Synchrony, will speak about his work and the exhibit. Free and open to the community. Cash bar reception at 6 p.m.; program at 6:30 p.m.

Tennessee Tourism Committee Open Forum

In mid-2011, Gov. Bill Haslam formed a statewide tourism committee with the purpose of maximizing Tennessee’s tourism potential. Chattanooga has two members on the committee: Bob Doak, president and CEO of the Chattanooga Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Charlie Arant, presidents of the Tennessee Aquarium. The committee will be hosting an open forum from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Chattanooga Hotel. The committee will update the public on its progress and answer questions regarding Tennessee’s tourism industry.
