Two long-time Girls Inc. of Chattanooga girls, Jasmine Pulliam and Alexis Eaton, are scholarship winners in the 2015 Girls Inc. National Scholars Program. Girls Inc. National Scholars exemplify the Girls Inc. mission of inspiring other girls to achieve academically and serve their communities. This year, Girls Inc. National awarded 31 high school girls across the nation from a record number of applications.
Pulliam was awarded a $20,000 scholarship. She’s been a Girls Inc. girl since she was seven years old. Now a senior in high school, Pulliam wants to become a pediatric surgeon. She plans to attend either UTK or Spelman college beginning this fall. Pulliam is enrolled in Girls Inc. of Chattanooga’s Women’s History Project and is an active participant in Girls Inc.’s school-break camps for teens.
“My family and I feel a sense of relief knowing there’s help paying for college,” Pulliam said. “I believe hard work pays off, and now I’ll be able to continue that belief in undergraduate school beginning this fall. I’m excited and well-prepared for the journey to being an accomplished, strong, smart, and bold woman. I couldn’t be happier or more appreciative of the help and support I’ve received from Girls Inc.”
Eaton, winner of a $5,000 award, has been involved in Girls Inc. since she was in sixth grade, participating in the Women’s History Project, the Emma Wheeler Health Careers Academy, and more. “I’ve been working hard, and you always wonder when it’s going to pay off,” she says. “We’ll, it finally paid off. I want to major in political science, then go into law, and maybe become an attorney. My main goal is to become president of the United States.”
Since 1993, Girls Inc. National has awarded over $4.6 million in scholarships across the United States and Canada.
