The Southern Railway and its related companies presented checks for $287,993 to Hamilton County and $97,953 to the City of Chattanooga to pay its 1959 taxes, the company reported. In all the Southern Railway System lines will pay $3,700,000 in Tennessee to state and local government for last year.
Monday, February 29
Mayor P.R. Olgiati announced the appointment of Harry B. Pierce, city license inspector since 1952, as purchasing agent effective March 1. Mr. Pierce succeeds Cooper T. Holt who resigned Saturday following his announcement that he plans to become a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Congress from the Third District.
Wednesday, March 2
Deterioration of the super-structure “at an increased rate of speed” has prompted the City Commission to order the 69-year-old Walnut Street Bridge to be closed immediately-possibly permanently.
Freezing rain and sleet in the Chattanooga area Wednesday disrupted electric power service leaving an estimated 10,000 homes without electricity and hundreds of homes were with out phone service.
