The Erlanger Health System board of trustees is pursuing a transition of the organization to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
Many safety-net hospitals across the country have already transitioned to a 501(c)(3) structure, Erlanger reports, including UT Medical Center in Tennessee and Grady Medical Center in Georgia.
The nonprofit structure gives health systems more operational flexibility and the ability to seek greater philanthropic contributions, among other benefits, the release states.
The board of trustees anticipates this process will take several months and is working with the Hamilton County Commission and other elected officials.
