Scenic City Half Marathon
The Scenic City Half Marathon and 5K Charity Challenge will start at Finley Stadium at 8 a.m. Half marathoners will receive a technical race shirt and a finishers medal. There is a 3.5-hour time limit. The top three finishers in each age group will receive an award. To give back to the community, a portion of each participant’s entry fee will be donated to a local charity. Additional funds can also be raised through the online fund raising system. Will Allen brings growing power to Chattanooga
A nationally celebrated leader in the local food movement, Will Allen will deliver a free, open-to-the-public lecture at UTC’s Fine Arts Center at 7 p.m. Allen is finding (and sharing) solutions to a pressing problem: how to feed a quickly growing population for generations to come. His model of intensive urban farming, food distribution, and education offers an educational opportunity for all. Just look at his two-acre farm in Milwaukee, which produces thousands of pounds of food.

Have a smokin’ hot marriage
At the First Things First event Celebrate Marriage, Dr. Pat Love, author of the book “Hot Monogamy,” will teach couples the art of creating a passion-filled marriage. This free event is for couples that are married or engaged, and offers the chance to laugh and leave with a fresh outlook on marriage. Celebrate Marriage will be held at Brainerd Church (formerly Brainerd United Methodist Church) at 4315 Brainerd Road from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with lunch and snacks provided. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Participants must pre-register for the seminar online at firstthings.org.

Red Cross’ Hometown Heroes Luncheon
to recognize local heroes
The American Red Cross of Southeast Tennessee will host its 6th Annual Hometown Heroes Luncheon at The Chattanoogan from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Keith Alvey, recent director for the Hurricane Sandy relief effort in New York. The Red Cross will select five local heroes from nominations submitted by the community. Categories include Good Samaritan – Youth; Good Samaritan – Adult; Red Cross Volunteer – Hospital; Red Cross Volunteer – Disaster; and First Responder. Anyone may nominate a hero by visiting american.redcross.org/southeasttnheroes. Nomination forms must be received by February 25 at 4:45 p.m. and will be judged by a committee of civic and community leaders. Nominees must live or work in Hamilton, Bledsoe, Grundy, Sequatchie, Rhea, Marion, Bradley, Meigs, McMinn, Polk or Monroe counties.
