The contract for construction of Hamilton County’s $2,000,000 nursing home is to be awarded by early summer, County Manager Raymond Proctor reported Friday. The architect’s plans are almost completed for the 195-bed nursing facility to be built on the county’s property at Silverdale.
Dr. E. F. Huckaba, Chattanooga dentist and civic leader, Saturday, was named chairman of special gifts for the 1964 Easter Seal Campaign.

Lewis A. Schmidt, Jr., was selected Engineer of the Year and presented a plaque Saturday night at a banquet closing National Engineers Week activities here.
The planting of willow oaks on Broad Street between Eighth and Ninth Streets as the start of a beautification program for the downtown area will be opened with special ceremonies next Thursday, it was announced by Mrs. F. Holland Cox, Jr., executive director of the Scenic Cities Beautiful Commission.
A total of 203,323 persons in Hamilton County and three North Georgia counties received the second feeding of Sabin Oral vaccine. The final Sabin Oral Sunday will be held April 5.
Monday, February 24
Three from this area are now serving in the Peace Corps. Stephen Alexander Keese, Jr., of Chattanooga has left for Espirito Santo, Brazil, where he will begin a two-year assignment with the Peace Corps.
The Chattanooga area is well represented in the South American Peace Corps. The first volunteer from this area was Charles Gordon Perry, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.G. Perry of East Ridge, who has been in Colombia the past two years and is now on special assignment.
Miss Susan Hackett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hackett, 19 West Brow Terrace, has been in Brazil since October 1962. She’s presently serving as an x-ray technician in Rio de Janeiro.

If you make a lot of telephone calls or call the same numbers frequently, you may get a new telephone which automatically dials itself. It uses plastic cards which you “code” yourself by puncturing with a pencil point. To place a call, you merely insert a card into a slot in the phone and push a start bar. Southern Bell Telephone Company has these available.
A $500,000 apartment complex will soon be constructed on the river between the Little Theatre and Fehn’s Restaurant, it was announced by Herbert B. Tabb and Associates. The 53-unit structure will be called Riviera Apartments.

A plant costing more than $1,000,000 will be built on Hooker Road in Chattanooga to fill increasing demands throughout the Southeast for oxygen, nitrogen, and argon, it was announced by the National Cylinder Gas division of Chemetron Corp. Randolph G. Wilson, Sr., NCG, is district manager in Chattanooga.

Eighteen girls have entered preliminary competition at Interstate Life and Accident Insurance Co. auditorium to determine 10 contestants for the Jaycee sponsored Miss Chattanooga pageant March 21.
Friday, February 28
Capt. L.R. Brown of the $3,000,000 dredge of the Bauer Dredging Co., Port Lavaca, Texas, is ready to move 2.7 million yards of dirt at Moccasin Bend. The operation will continue 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The project will take about three months of moving about 20,000 to 24,000 yards of dirt a day through a 27-inch pipeline.
