Newsmakers: Garrett serving on TSA legislative committee

The Tennessee Sheriffs Association’s legislative committee has enlisted Hamilton County Sheriff Austin Garrett to serve.

The TSA’s legislative committee is comprised of sheriffs who review and assist with legislation that supports victims’ rights and impacts men and women serving in law enforcement.

The committee works closely with state legislators on proposed legislation and amendments.

“I’m honored to be appointed to serve on the TSA’s legislative committee and to be a part of proposing and advocating for legislation that supports the rights of victims and law enforcement personnel who serve and protect the citizens of Tennessee,” says Garrett.

CSMO welcomes new total joint surgeon Lawson

Fellowship trained and board-certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. Joshua Lawson has joined the Center for Sports Medicine & Orthopedics as a total joint specialist.

Lawson sees patients at CSMO’s McCallie and Parkridge offices and performs surgery at CSMO Surgery Center and Parkridge Medical Center.

Lawson is a joint replacement surgeon who treats a wide range of adult orthopedic conditions, with an emphasis on knee and hip replacement and complex revision surgery. He also performs robotic assisted knee replacement.

A Chattanooga native, Lawson graduated from Hixson High School in 2005 and attended Lee University on a golf scholarship while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis and completed a five-year orthopedic surgery residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

After medical school and residency training, Lawson completed fellowship training in complex and revision hip and knee replacements under the direction of Dr. Arthur Malkani at the University of Louisville. During this fellowship, he also authored several nationally published presentations and papers on joint replacement surgery.

Lawson is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Academy of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the International Congress of Joint Reconstruction and the AO Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving care for patients with musculoskeletal injuries.

Northside Neighborhood House announces chairs

Chad and Megan Goodman will serve as the committee chairs of Northside Neighborhood House’s 2023 Not-So-Silent Auction. Chad is a CPA and partner at HHM Certified Public Accountants. Megan is the owner of Oh, MG! Design. The couple have been volunteering their time at Northside Neighborhood House for over 10 years.

This year’s Not-So-Silent Auction is scheduled to take place Oct. 19. Tickets will go on sale in June. The event will offer food and drinks, a silent auction, a live auction and the titular not-so-silent auction.

During the not-so-silent portion of the program, guests pay cash to stand up, after which an auctioneer might or might not have time to call them. The last person the auctioneers call before a mystery gong clashes wins the item or experience being auctioned.

The event funds the Northside Neighborhood House, a nonprofit that has been serving Northern Hamilton County residents for almost 100 years. The agency ensures individuals are housed with working utilities and provided low-cost necessities through its thrift stores.

Northside Neighborhood House also runs five CommUNITY School programs in Hamilton County.

Compton, Steward depart Kelly administration

Mike Compton and Tamara Steward have stepped down from their roles within Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly’s administration. Steward, the city’s first chief equity officer, chose to pursue opportunities in the private sector, while Compton stepped down for health reasons.

Compton joined the city in September 2022 and advised the mayor on a wide range of issues.

He previously served as chief of staff to Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger from 2011 to 2022 and was chief of staff under Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker from 2001 to 2005.

Steward began serving as the city’s chief equity officer in February 2022. She helped to establish Chattanooga’s first Department of Equity & Community Engagement.

In her role as chief equity officer, Steward advised Mayor Kelly and his senior staff on diversity, equity and inclusion issues and improvements. She also led Chattanooga’s multi-agency management of the migrant bus crisis in summer 2022.

The city will begin working to fill Steward’s position.
