Saturday, February 15

Miss Rowena Sauls entertained, in honor of her guest, Miss Annie D. Hall of Cleveland, with a Valentine party. Her guests were Misses Lillian Winters, Ruth Mills, Hester and Sarah Blair, Blanche Woodward, Susie McNulty, Dent Gillespie, Irma Harter and Margaret Sadd; and Messrs. Drew Massee, Clarence McCollum, Ralph Dwight, Bernard Jennings, Will McNulty, Gordon Wood, Joe Gillespie, Arch Willingham, Corbin Woodward and John McGaughy.

Crawford Varnell is critically ill at the home of his sister, Mrs. Taylor Davis, in Highland Park.

Sunday, February 16

Judge Lewis Shepherd related an interesting story about the source of a generous gift for a hospital to Chattanooga and the purchase of grounds in 1870 for the site. Dr. G.A. Baxter was anxious for the hospital, and Capt. H.S. Chamberlain was helping to raise the necessary funds. A young Austrian banker, Emile Erlanger, who met the beautiful daughter of John Slidell of Louisiana, U.S. Minister to France, and fell in love with and married her, was the benefactor. While in Chattanooga in the interest of a railroad, Mr. Erlanger gave $5,000 for the building, which bears the name “Baroness Erlanger.”

County Superintendent J.L. Hair has notified all principals of Hamilton County Schools to attend a meeting March 1 at the Chamber of Commerce to organize “Boys Corn Clubs.” Object is to have scientific and practical farmers.

Monday, February 17

Misses Cornelia Mott and Cornelia Thompson of Edinburg, Ind., left Saturday night for Florida after a visit with Mrs. S.A. Williams in Highland Park.

Tuesday, February 18

Mrs. J.C. Twinam entertained with a box party at the Bijou in honor of Mrs. Frank Enwright. Her guests were Mesdames Edward Rose, E.F. Wheland, Newton Logan and May Barr Farrington. Following the play, an ice course was served at the Palace.

The “old” Giant star, Sammy Strang Nicklin, is home for a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Nicklin. He arrived from Paris Sunday. In a few weeks, he will go to West Point for another season of baseball coaching the West Point team.

Wednesday, February 19

James McCall of Gibson, Ill., has returned to his home after a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Howard McCall in Fort Wood.

Thursday, February 20

Mrs. Mark J. O’Brien and sons and Mrs. Frank Kinchley and children are at the Grand Hotel in Rigi-Kaltbad, Switzerland.

King Fritts has returned to Vanderbilt after a few days at home. His guest, Lee Tolley, has returned to Sewanee.

Friday, February 21

Mrs. R.H. Hunt entertained in honor of Mrs. J.C. Massee, who is leaving with her family for Dayton, Ohio to join Dr. Massee. Twenty-five guests were present.

A successful drive for a “White Way” on Market Street under the direction of A.W. Burke, president of the Retail Merchants Association, has been completed. A contract calling for an expenditure of $18,000 has been let, and it is hoped it will be ready for the Confederate Reunion in May.
