The Chattanooga Bar Association on Thursday, December 12 will host attorney John Bode’s annual “Labor and Employment Law Update.” The seminar will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the J. Guy Beatty Conference Center, located on the 5th floor of the Volunteer Building. Participants will earn 2.0 hours of general CLE credit. The cost is $65 for CBA members and $95 for non-members.
Once again, the seminar will feature an open bar. “The open bar is my hook. I mean no disrespect to the participants, but I’m hoping to set a festive atmosphere, since it’s the holiday season, and believe the open bar might bring in one or two attorneys who otherwise wouldn’t have come,” Bode (pronounced “bo-dee”) told the Hamilton County Herald in 2011.
Whatever draws an attorney to the seminar, participants will receive advanced instruction on labor and employment law issues from Bode and guest speakers representing different perspectives within the legal profession. “We want to provide experienced practitioners with updates they might (have missed) as a result of their busy law practice,” Bode said.
As with past seminars, Bode has invited a number of colleagues to speak.
Steve Tobias, supervisor, Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and attorney Michael Mallen of Miller & Martin will present a talk titled “I’m From The Government, And I’m Here To Help.”
Attorney James M. Johnson will discuss “The Anatomy Of A Good Plaintiff’s Case.”
Attorney Ian K. Leavy of Volkswagen Group of America will present a talk titled “International Corporations and U.S. Law.”
Miller & Martin attorneys Scott Simmons and Jennifer Terry will discuss “Noncompetition Agreements: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.”
Attorney C. Maury Nicely of Evans, Harrison & Hackett has titled his talk “Surprise.”
Finally, Bode will offer a review of the past year in labor and employment law.
Bode said the seminar can serve as an introduction for attorneys who only “dabble” in labor and employment issues or have an interest in pursuing them.
Bode concentrates his practice on labor relations and employment opportunity. Over the last two decades, he has served as lead trial counsel in numerous cases before state and federal agencies and courts and the National Labor Relations Board. He has extensive experience representing many prominent national, regional and Tennessee employers in union organizing campaigns, collective bargaining, arbitrations, strikes, decertification petitions, wage and hour and other state and federal audits.
