Power your new year with five energy-efficient home resolutions

As you step into the new year, you might want to consider resolutions that benefit your wallet and contribute to a healthier environment.

High energy consumption not only hurts your finances but also has a negative impact on the planet. Making your home more energy-efficient doesn’t require complex tasks. In fact, simple adjustments can make a significant difference.

Here are some suggestions to help you reduce energy consumption in your household in the coming year.

Heating and cooling system

As you plan home maintenance activities for the year, set a calendar reminder to clean or replace the heater and air conditioner filters. Regular maintenance ensures optimal air quality and keeps your system running smoothly. Experts recommend writing the date of the new filter on the side to keep track of when it was last changed.

Appliance usage

The new year is an excellent time to start forming new habits. When it comes to using the appliances in your home, there are easy practices you can incorporate to lower your energy consumption.

Consider running large appliances during off-peak hours, such as early morning or late evening, to potentially lower energy bills. Your utility provider can provide insights into recommended usage times. Additionally, simple practices like air-drying clothes or dishes can contribute to energy savings.

Water heater

According to EnergyStar.gov, water heaters account for about 20% of a home’s energy usage. Reduce your water heater energy consumption by taking shorter showers and setting the temperature to 120 degrees.

Adjusting the temperature helps save money by minimizing standby losses (heat transferred to the air around the water heater). Setting the temperature too high, at 140ºF, can result in annual standby heat losses ranging from $36 to $61 as indicated by Energy.gov.

Outdoor water usage

Extend water-saving habits to your outdoor routines. Water your lawn in the morning to avoid evaporation, and if you’re considering a garden refresh, opt for native or drought-tolerant plants. These choices not only conserve water but also contribute to a more sustainable landscaping approach – which is perfect for those who don’t have the greenest of thumbs.

Recycling

Reduce the amount of waste you generate by making mindful choices when buying and using products.

Switch to reusable water bottles, totes and containers to reduce plastic waste. Also, recycle what you do use to conserve energy and natural resources.

Plastic bottles are the most recycled plastic product in the U.S., The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports. Recycling 10 plastic bottles saves enough energy to power a laptop for more than 25 hours.

Embrace your community’s curbside recycling program, or explore recycling options with your county or city if not already enrolled.
