Legal Aid of East Tennessee is the beneficiary of the proceeds from an auction that has become a beloved part of the Chattanooga Inn of Court’s annual holiday party. Members of the Justices Ray L. Brock Jr.–Robert E. Cooper American Inn of Court presented the $12,550 in proceeds to the Chattanooga office of Legal Aid on Dec. 21.
Serving 26 counties, Legal Aid provides representation in cases involving landlord-tenant disputes, domestic violence, consumer law and public benefits primarily to low-income Tennessee residents who cannot afford to hire a lawyer.
“The money raised by the Inn is particularly welcome this year as we continue to impact the lives of those who otherwise would not have access to basic legal services,” says Sheri Fox, executive director of Legal Aid. “We will use this money to make lasting changes in the lives of our clients and to make a difference for the entire community.”
Inn of Court President Lee Davis of Davis & Hoss says Legal Aid deserves the time, effort and money raised.
“Legal Aid serves the public interest in an area of law that’s often underfunded and overlooked. Only when services like those provided by Legal Aid are fully funded by state, local and federal sources can we be assured that there really is equal justice for all.”
The purpose of an Inn of Court is to improve the skills, professionalism, ethics and civility of the bench and bar. Membership is by invitation only. The Chattanooga chapter is composed of over 100 local judges and lawyers.
