The Chattanooga chapter of the Federal Bar Association has presented Miller & Martin litigation attorney Randy Wilson with its 2024 Judge Bill Carter Civility Award, the title of which could suggest that Wilson is a nice guy.
But the federal bar’s accolade is no nice guy – or nice gal – award. Rather, it goes above and beyond an attorney’s disposition to recognize federal court practitioners who “do the job the right way.”
“The job” entails advocating for one’s clients. “The right way” includes providing well-prepared and zealous representation while being respectful to the court, opposing parties and opposing counsel.
An attorney must also abide by the highest ethical standards and advance the profession through personal integrity and mentorship of young lawyers.
In other words, Wilson is well-deserving of the honor, says Robert Wheeler, current president of the local FBA.
“The compelling reasons cited in support of Randy’s nomination for the award, coupled with first-hand knowledge of his professional civility exhibited inside and outside of the courthouse, embodies the qualities for which the award seeks to give recognition.”
The federal bar presented the award to Wilson during its annual meeting in November. Dozens of attorneys and federal judges from the Eastern District of Tennessee attended the event.
Wilson says he was honored to receive the acknowledgement.
“Having known Bill Carter for 40 years and practicing before our federal judiciary during that same length of time, selection for this by my peers was one of the most meaningful events of my career.”
Wilson joins attorney Roger Dickson as Miller & Martin recipients of this award.
