Mrs. Fields Eggnog Cookies

This article originally ran in the Daily Record on December 12, 2008.
If you haven’t yet completed your Christmas list items – you’re quickly running out of time! I say that only because I have to keep reminding myself!
With every item that is done, I mark it off the list and move on to the next one. The only problem is, the “items” keep coming! It seems like all I am doing is adding to the pile of stuff on the floor that has to be wrapped. Unfortunately, allotted time to sit down and wrap isn’t on the list!
Every year Don and I say we are going to cut back on our gift buying. Do you do that too? It has never seemed to work much in the past, but it did this year.
Because of our faith, we are not afraid of the future and where the shattered economy might take us, but, as responsible Christians, parents and business owners, we do believe that we have to be ready for whatever might happen. For those reasons, we really did cut back on our spending this year.
One thing we haven’t cut back on though, is our eating. And we probably won’t unless the supply dries up! Eating is usually the last thing to cut back on, especially during the holidays!
I have come across a great eggnog cookie recipe. Don and I love eggnog. In fact, I just cannot buy one of the little pint cartons, because we will drink every bit of it in one evening. If not one, then at least by the next one and that is just not healthy! I guess it is good that the stuff is only on the market during the holidays!
Back to the recipe. This one claims to be one of “Mrs. Fields,” of the famous Debbie Fields. However, I wondered about this claim (especially after the Neiman-Marcus fable), and after some research I am still not sure if it is an original recipe or not, but I do know it is good.
Most of you probably remember the story of Mrs. Fields and her famous chocolate chip cookie recipe purchased from Neiman Marcus for $250.
If you don’t know about it, the story goes that in 1983, a customer and her daughter, eating lunch at Neiman-Marcus, asked for their wonderful chocolate cookie recipe. When told by the waitress that it was available for ‘two-fifty,’ the diner instructed the waitress to charge it to her credit card, only finding our later that the price was $250, rather than the expected $2.50, and it also seems that the recipe wasn’t really the original Mrs. Fields recipe.
I think the story has morphed several times during the years, because I read several different online versions. In addition, after visiting the Mrs. Fields Cookies online cookie store, I’m almost positive that this is not an original recipe, either.
However, that doesn’t matter much to me, I just know it is good, and someone is not getting the credit they deserve for their cookie!
Mrs. Fields Eggnog Cookies
2 1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 1/4 cups sugar
3/4 cup butter
1/2 cup eggnog
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 egg yolks
1 tablespoon nutmeg
Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In medium bowl mix well flour, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg. Set aside.
In another bowl, cream sugar and butter to form a grainy paste. Add eggnog, vanilla and egg yolks, and beat at medium speed until smooth. Add dry ingredients and beat at low speed just until combined.
Drop by rounded teaspoons onto ungreased baking sheets, 1 inch apart. Sprinkle lightly with nutmeg. Bake for 23-25 minutes or until bottoms turn light brown. Remove from pan and allow to cool.
