How to keep your home safe during holiday season

Now that the last delicious bites of turkey and stuffing are gone, many families in the Chattanooga area are already thinking of Christmas travel. As you begin your packing list and finalize your travel plans, it’s important to take time to ensure your home is properly secured.

Home burglary happens every 25 seconds, the FBI reports, with an average loss per theft valued at $2,661. Ouch! Thankfully, keeping your home safe is more affordable than ever thanks to today’s technology, which includes a large variety of options ranging from doorbell cameras to window alarms.

If you’re contemplating adding or upgrading your home security, be sure to include professionally monitored systems in your considerations. Professional systems offer 24/7 monitoring for similar pricing of self-installed systems. Renters also now have more options to secure their belongings with wireless security systems that can be installed and removed easily without damaging the leased property.

Proper outdoor lighting is also a necessity when it comes to keeping your valuables safe. If your home does not have adequate lighting, motion detecting flood lights and solar-powered pathway lights are an excellent choice to keep entrances well-lit and to deter criminals.

During the busy holiday season, it’s also easy to forget to click your car alarm button or keep gifts out of sight. Theft from vehicles is the most common type of larceny, higher than shoplifting, pickpocketing or theft from buildings. Protect your belongings by always locking them up and keeping packages secured in the trunk, and then take them inside as soon as you arrive at home.

If you’ll be away from home for an extended period, remember to put a hold on your mail and ask a friend to pick up any packages that might be delivered. A pile of packages is an easy indicator that a home is empty and makes your residence a potential target. It’s also wise to leave a light on inside and ask a neighbor to keep an eye out for anything suspicious.

If you add additional safety features to your home such as lighting or a security system, be sure to notify your insurance company. Most policies offer substantial discounts for these security measures and saving during the holidays is always a bonus!
