Hamilton County Sheriff Austin Garrett recently presented two Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office corrections deputies with the agency’s Life-Saving Medal in recognition of actions that saved the lives of two inmates in separate incidents.

Corrections Deputy William Miller was awarded the Life-Saving Medal for performing the Heimlich Maneuver on a choking female inmate and successfully saving her life by dislodging the obstruction March 12.

Corrections Deputy Aziza Williams was awarded the Life-Saving Medal for performing CPR on an unresponsive female inmate at the Hamilton County Jail & Detention Center Aug. 23. Her efforts helped to save the life of the inmate.

The HCSO recently instituted the presentation of several medals for exceptional acts of bravery, heroism, life preservation and meritorious service, including the Medal of Valor, the Exceptional Service Medal, the Life-Saving Medal, the Sheriff’s Star and the Medal of Merit.

“Each day, the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office perform above and beyond their assigned duties. Their actions – particularly those that rise to the level of life preservation, which is one of our most fundamental roles in public safety – should be regarded and acknowledged,” says Garrett.
